Mainland calling, how's Don Ho?
Regular folks call newsrooms during civil emergencies trying to get information. But other news organizations do, as well. During the aftermath of the Sunday morning earthquake, Star-Bulletin staffers fielded questions from international media.
The television news channel FOX News -- the "fair and balanced" people -- called us, too, desperately trying to find out one crucial bit of information, the one thing the world wanted to know about the earthquake in Hawaii:
Was Don Ho OK? And if so, would he do a live interview in the middle of the night to assure the world that Hawaii hadn't been washed away?
Ho is recovering from heart surgery, and we're not sure if he was available. But it's interesting that Don Ho, the world's indelible musical link to Hawaii, is considered the go-to guy for information about the islands.
