State officials closed more than a dozen schools on the Big Island because of concerns about earthquake damage.

Greg Knudsen, DOE spokesman, said the schools were closed so officials could inspect them for damage.

"Primarily there is just a lot of debris around, nothing really dramatic, nothing like collapsed roofs or buildings," Knudsen said.

Officials with the state's Accounting and General Services Department are expected to survey the Big Island schools today.

Teachers and staff are expected to work today, Knudsen said.

Here is a list of the schools that are closed today:

Paauilo Intermediate and Elementary; Honokaa Elementary, Intermediate and High; Kohala Elementary, Intermediate and High; Waimea Elementary and Middle; Waikoloa Elementary; Kealakehe Elementary; Honaunau Elementary; and Laupahoehoe High and Elementary.
