Saint Louis defends top spot from pesky Punahou
Mamiya rushes for 95 yards, throws for 132
The sequel didn't start out with much action, but it certainly closed like a thriller.
Micah Mamiya, for a second time this season, derailed Punahou with a multitude of scrambles and touchdown passes as top-ranked Saint Louis won 33-27 last night before 8,487 at Aloha Stadium.
Saint Louis was outstanding in all three phases of the game, to coach Delbert Tengan's delight.
"We had a nice, well-rounded win," he said with concerns about a potential letdown. Saint Louis, which led most of the way, is now 4-0 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play (7-0 overall), while Punahou and Kamehameha now have two losses.
"It's a different scenario," said Tengan, whose last state title team in 2003 lost a game early and had to fight its way to the championship. "We'll see if our team can handle it. We have a tough game with Kamehameha next week."
Unlike the first meeting with then-No. 1 Punahou two weeks
ago, Saint Louis did not have a 35-point first-half lead. This time, the Crusaders were able to fend off Punahou's second-half rally with Mamiya's magical plays on third-and-long situations making the difference.
The senior ran for 95 yards on 13 carries and threw for 132 yards without an interception. In all, Saint Louis amassed 338 total yards without a turnover. Punahou did its best to curtail Mamiya, who had hurt the Buffanblu in the first matchup with keepers off the flex option.
"They were coming after me on every play," Mamiya said. "They took me out of the game (early), but it opened up our running game. Our offensive line did a good job again."
Defensively, the Crusaders forced Punahou away from its favorite plays much of the night. Linebacker Jacob Barit patrolled the field from sideline to sideline, and defensive lineman Scott Smith, at 6-foot-6, batted down three of Brett Kan's pass attempts.
"Our defense did a better job. We took away a lot of their underneath cross routes," Tengan said.
Miah Ostrowski, who excels on those crossing routes, still caught eight passes for 112 yards, and Dalton Hilliard totaled 123 yards from scrimmage. Kan passed for 294 yards on 29-for-51 passing. He threw two touchdown passes, but was also picked off twice, including one by Barit that helped Saint Louis take a 13-point first-half lead.
Speed, which Mamiya has plenty of, became more of a factor when Punahou linebacker Adam Morris left early in the game. One of only two returning defensive starters from last year's team, Morris suffered a leg injury during Saint Louis' first play from scrimmage.
Punahou, like Kamehameha, can only hope for a minor miracle in the ILH race.
"Saint Louis played well and made a lot of third-down plays, and we didn't," coach Kale Ane said. "We played hard right to the end."
The Crusaders scored first on Mamiya's 33-yard bomb to Billy Stutzmann. After Kenton Chun slipped and misfired on the PAT attempt, Saint Louis led 6-0 with 7:22 remaining in the first quarter.
Punahou's offense, meanwhile, sputtered until the second quarter. On their fourth possession of the game, the Buffanblu went to a no-huddle, up-tempo pace and drove 69 yards to paydirt. Kan was 6-for-7 during the drive, hoisting a 37-yard strike to Ostrowski deep over the middle for a touchdown. The Buffanblu led 7-6 with 9:10 left in the second quarter.
Austin Wahinekona returned the ensuing kickoff 38 yards to give the Crusaders a first down at the 50-yard line. Mamiya, who rarely kept the ball, gave Wahinekona and Lene Aumua plenty of dives over the middle. The plan worked, as Wahinekona finished off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run up the gut. The Crusaders led 13-7 with 5:44 left in the first half.
Moments later, Kan's pass attempt to Kyle Whitford over the middle was intercepted by Barit. The senior linebacker returned the ball 25 yards to the Punahou 7-yard line. Two plays later, Wahinekona scored easily on a 5-yard burst up the middle, and Saint Louis led 20-7 with 4:39 to go in the first half.
Punahou's offense fared no better until late in the third quarter. The Buffanblu drove 64 yards and scored on Hilliard's 2-yard run on a toss sweep. Punahou trailed 20-14 with 1:02 left in the third quarter.
Saint Louis responded with a nine-play, 65-yard march to the end zone. Mamiya, who recovered his own fumble early in the drive, found Shane Ahlo wide open in the right flat, and Ahlo scored on the 17-yard touchdown pass. On the PAT, a high snap left Chun at the mercy of Punahou's defense unit for a loss, but the Crusaders led 26-14 with 10 minutes left in the contest.
Punahou needed less than 3 minutes to drive 67 yards for another touchdown. Kan's 22-yard strike to Whitford on a post route brought the Buffanblu within 26-21 with 7:18 remaining.
However, Saint Louis was tough in the clutch. On the ensuing drive, Mamiya scrambled for 26 yards on third and 13, and then fired a key first-down pass to Stutzmann on fourth and 7 to keep the drive alive. He eventually found Ahlo open again down the right sideline for a 23-yard touchdown that put the game away. Saint Louis led 33-21 with 2:23 remaining.
Punahou tacked on a final touchdown on Kan's 3-yard scramble as time expired.
No. 4 Kamehameha 28, Pac-Five 15
Truman Chun rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns as the Warriors rallied from a 9-0 deficit for a key win. Kamehameha improved to 2-2 in league play (6-2 overall) and kept its title hopes alive.
"We were dead at the beginning. We came out flat," Chun said. "I think we took them lightly."
Pac-Five dropped to 0-4 in ILH play (2-5 overall) despite outgaining the Warriors. Jordan Ho-Ching rushed for 157 yards on just 12 carries for Pac-Five, which finished with 212 rushing yards.
Kamehameha's Ryan Montez, who fumbled early in the game, atoned for his mistake by returning a fourth-quarter kickoff 95 yards for the deciding touchdown.
Damien 14, Iolani 10
Kama Bailey rushed for 220 yards and two touchdowns as the Monarchs defeated the Raiders. George Martin added 76 yards on the ground for Damien.
Ryan Dung threw for 163 yards and ran for 79 yards for Iolani in a losing effort.

Donovan Matas answered with a 10-yard touchdown run and Edwin Rubio returned a punt 78 yards for a score to lift the Bulldogs over the Chargers.
Waialua clinched a playoff berth with the win.
Waipahu 41, Anuenue 14
The Marauders' Jesse Doctolero scored two touchdowns in the first half, and Waipahu exploded for 27 points in the second quarter to take a comfortable 41-0 lead.
The Marauders threw just two passes in the game.
Kaimuki 28, Nanakuli 0
James Bower scored three touchdowns -- on an interception return, a catch and a run -- to lead the Bulldogs in a shutout of the Golden Hawks.
