HTA and PGA extend deal
The Hawaii Tourism Authority has signed a new agreement with the PGA Tour, extending the state agency's official marketing partnership through 2010, with an extension clause through 2014. The contract ensures that the season-opening events on the PGA and Champions tours will continue to be held in Hawaii, in addition to other events, state officials said yesterday. There are six men's events played in Hawaii, including the Mercedes Championships (won last year by Stuart Appleby).
CU's Whiting is Bob Cousy Award candidate
Chaminade senior guard Zack Whiting is a candidate for the 2007 Bob Cousy Award, which is presented by The Hartford.
The award recognizes the best college point guard, regardless of level. The award is given out by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on an annual basis.
Other nominees are A.J. Price of UConn, Mustafa Shakur of Arizona and Greg Paulus of Duke.
"Now the country knows what we believed all along here, Zack Whiting is amongst the best point guards in the country," Silverswords coach Matt Mahar said.
Beach Boys blank CaneFires in HWB
Eric Young Jr. had three hits, including a double, to lead Waikiki past West Oahu 6-0 in Hawaii Winter Baseball last night at Hans L'Orange Field.
Three pitchers for the Beach Boys (3-5) -- Henricus Vanden Hurk, Atsushi Nohmi and Brian Anderson -- limited the CaneFires (3-5) to two hits.
Kauai's Irons out of contention for world title
Kauai's Andy Irons lost in the quarterfinals to Bobby Martinez yesterday in the Billabong Pro Mundaka surf contest in Spain.
The loss eliminated Irons from the chase for his fourth world championship.
Seven-time champ Kelly Slater advanced to the Mundaka final along with Martinez and Joel Parkinson. Only Slater, Parkinson and Burrow are still in contention for the world title.
Ustyuzhanina advances in singles, doubles
Brigham Young-Hawaii's Julia Ustyuzhanina defeated Marcela Bayon of Emporia State 6-1, 6-0 yesterday at Ft. Myers, Fla., to advance to the NCAA Division II tennis semifinals.
Ustyuzhanina will pay West Florida's Tammy Kevey in the semifinals today.
Ustyuzhanina also teamed up with Seasiders teammate Ramona Husaru to defeat Northeastern State's Simona Stoica and Amanda Stone 6-2, 7-6 (7) and advanced to the doubles semifinals.
Seasiders beat Sea Warriors in soccer
Kamuela Kamoe's goal in the 56th minute lifted Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 2-1 men's soccer victory over Hawaii Pacific yesterday at Kaneohe.
Michael Akinaka also scored for the Seasiders (5-4, 3-2 PacWest). Gabe Sugar had the lone goal for the Sea Warriors (6-5-1, 1-3-1).
