Castle players continue tribute to teammate who died

By Paul Honda

There are few words that can soothe the pain of losing a loved one.

At Castle High School, the tragic death of Patrick Kapahu will not be forgotten, not by a long shot. His teammates continued on their mission rather than stand frozen in time, offering their efforts for the remainder of the season as a living tribute to their friend.

By moving forward, the Knights have honored the talented lineman.

"The team playing the game against Kahuku, has helped them cope with the tragedy both spiritually and mentally," Castle coach Nelson Maeda said. "Death is never easy for anyone, let alone a 17-year-old teenager. I believe focusing on football besides helping them cope, has also given them a renewed sense of purpose and drive to play the game that we all sometimes take as in many things in life, for granted."

Maeda, a longtime coach, speaks from experience. He lost his wife, Jodi, to cancer in 2002. Before she died, Jodi Maeda implored her husband to continue coaching.

With Kapahu fresh in their minds and hearts, the Knights pushed Kahuku to the brink last weekend. The healing, Maeda said, will take time.

"The planned memorial services in our school this week and his funeral services the following Saturday will be tough as we say our final goodbyes to Pat," Maeda said. "But the boys know his spirit will always be with us."

Here's a look at tomorrow's matchups:

OIA RED EAST

Kalaheo (1-6, 0-5) vs. No. 10 McKinley (4-3, 3-2) (homecoming), Roosevelt Stadium -- The Tigers have everything going for them despite last week's loss to Farrington. It's homecoming, and a win over Kalaheo would net a higher seeding.

The Mustangs are out of the playoff chase. Even with a win, at best they can only tie Moanalua (should Na Menehune lose at Kahuku), and Moanalua has the head-to-head tiebreaker. This is a test of character for the Mustangs, who have been highly competitive in their first season of Red East play.

Moanalua (2-5, 1-4) at No. 3 Kahuku (5-2, 4-1) (homecoming) -- The last time the Red Raiders lost at home, the continents as we know them today were connected by land bridges and woolly mammoths patrolled the plains. Something like that. Kahuku can seal the top seed in the East and a first-round bye with a win. A loss would give Farrington and McKinley the opportunity to seize the top two positions.

No. 7 Farrington (5-2, 4-1) at Castle (3-4, 3-2) (homecoming) -- Castle's first home game since Kapahu's tragic death promises to be another emotional night. The Knights have a remote chance to gain a first-round bye. They need to beat the Governors and for McKinley to lose against Kalaheo.

OIA RED WEST

No. 5 Waianae (5-2, 5-0) at Kapolei (2-5, 2-3) -- The Seariders have the top seed in the West sewn up, which means they have a first-round bye in hand. What they don't want are any injuries or breakdowns in execution. Bad habits can happen in a situation like this, and that would slow all the momentum of a five-game win streak.

Kapolei, meanwhile, is still in position to earn a playoff berth despite a rocky season. The young Hurricanes can secure a berth with a win. A loss would toss the 'Canes into potential ties with Campbell and Radford.

No. 9 Leilehua (5-2, 4-1) at Campbell (3-4, 1-4) (homecoming) -- The Sabers will celebrate homecoming, but a win would vault them into the running for a playoff berth. The Mules, though, are coming off a huge win at Aiea. Quarterback Bryant Moniz and receiver Martin Iosefo were brilliant in the win, but Leilehua's defense was back to its old self, allowing just 5 rushing yards.

Radford (2-5, 1-4) at Mililani (5-2, 3-2) (homecoming) -- The Trojans are on a roll with three straight wins. Rustin Funakoshi had a season-high 201 passing yards in their win at Campbell a week ago. Radford, however, threw for 291 yards between quarterbacks Epa Maika and Justin Lord in a win at Kapolei last week. This is a big test for Mililani's erratic secondary.

OIA WHITE

Kalani (0-7, 0-6) at Kaiser (5-2, 5-1) -- The Cougars have inclinations of throwing the ball all the time, but talent like Isaac Saffery is hard to come by. The bulldozing back rushed for a career-high 264 yards against Roosevelt last week. If they can secure a good lead against Kalani, the question for coach Pat Samsonas is, 'When will he rest Saffery?' A win brings the front-running Cougars one step closer to the conference title and home-field advantage in the playoffs.

BIIF

Ka'u (0-6, 0-6) vs. Hilo (2-4, 2-5), Wong Stadium -- The last time the Trojans were competitive against the Vikings was in the mid-1990s, when Mark Pollard was coach. Ka'u had a 4-6 season, including 4-3 against the smaller schools.

Kohala (1-5, 1-5) at No. 8 Kealakehe (8-0, 6-0) -- The Waveriders have won their last four games by a combined score of 181-0. Running back Gabe Tuata continues to be a frontrunner for top BIIF honors despite a limited number of touches in these blowout games.

Waiakea (3-3, 3-4) at Kamehameha-Hawaii (4-2, 4-3) -- Warriors vs. Warriors, all in blue and white. While Kealakehe runs away with the Division I title, D-II Kamehameha-Hawaii is in the thick of its race with Honokaa and Konawaena. Reece Alnas has performed superbly for KS-Hawaii on offense, defense and special teams.

KIF

Kapaa (1-4, 0-3) vs. Kauai (5-0, 3-0), Vidinha Stadium -- Andrew Renaud threw for a career-high 375 yards in last week's 41-0 win at Waimea. He found Pono Matthews for touchdown passes of 81 and 64 yards in the first quarter. Kauai won the first matchup with Kapaa, 51-6, on Sept. 22.

MIL

Kamehameha-Maui (2-4, 0-1) vs. No. 6 Baldwin (6-0, 1-0), War Memorial Stadium -- The Bears opened the second round last week with another wipeout win, 42-2 over Maui. When they played KS-Maui five weeks ago, the Bears won 41-9. Chase Nakamura, who broke an MIL single-season record for receiving touchdowns last week, played only one half in the previous game with KS-Maui, as did quarterback Jordan Helle.
