Month goes to dogs at Humane Society
PET OHANA
Hawaiian Humane Society
This is a month when litters of puppies are traditionally available for adoption. During October we shine the spotlight on adding a dog to your family, while also encouraging extra love for the canines who already share our hearts.
Question: Does the society have a large selection of dogs?
Answer: With more than 50 dogs available every day, the humane society offers all sizes and shapes. The $60 adoption fee includes spay or neuter surgery, a health exam, worming, initial vaccinations, a microchip ID, a leash and two weeks of post-adoption care, more than $250 worth of services.
Q: And in October?
A: Dogs adopted in October go home with free food from Nutro and a doggie goodie bag from Bark Avenue.
Q: Can I request a specific breed of dog?
A: Ask the adoption counselors for a blue Adoption Profile form. This will help the staff match you with the type of dog (or other pet) that you wish to adopt. This service is for adult animals only.
Q: What about puppies?
A: Puppies are often available but they usually find homes quickly. Plan to be at the shelter when it opens, find the puppy pen and play with the pups. If you like one, put your name on the list and meet with an adoption counselor. Be patient -- it could take several visits to find your true puppy love.
HERE ARE some essentials for caring for your canine companion:
» Outfit your dog with a collar and ID tag.
» Exercise your dog and play with it; give it proper shelter and companionship.
» Visit the veterinarian for a checkup. Spay or neuter your dog.
» Provide a nutritionally balanced diet, along with plenty of fresh water.
ON SATURDAY, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., dogs from the humane society also will be available for adoption at Crazy Shirts Ala Moana. Come and meet the pack!
