Irons brothers, Sullivan advance in Spain
Hawaii surfers Andy Irons, Bruce Irons and Pancho Sullivan won their heats yesterday to advance to the fourth round of the Billabong Mundaka Pro surf contest in Spain.
Andy Irons, a three-time world champion, is still in the running for a fourth world title. He edged Brazil's Yuri Sodre 11.76 to 10.60 yesterday in the World Championship Tour event.
Bruce Irons cruised past Luke Stedman, and Sullivan tipped Tim Reyes.
» Hawaii's Megan Abubo is ranked 10th in the latest WCT women's ratings.
Fellow Hawaii surfers Rochelle Ballard (13th) and Keala Kennelly (14th) are also ranked.
Australia's Layne Beachley, who lost the Havaianas Beachley Classic final to Sofia Mulanovich yesterday in Australia, is the ratings leader.
CaneFires halt Beach Boys in HWB
West Oahu, led by Emerson Frostad's home run and John Otness' three RBIs, defeated the Waikiki Beach Boys 7-4 last night in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game at Hans L'Orange Field.
The CaneFires improved to 3-4.
Dexter Fowler had a triple and drove in three runs for the Beach Boys (2-5).
Hawaii's Gammie is Golfweek's player of week
UH golfer Dale Gammie earned Golfweek's National Women's Player of the Week honor yesterday.
Gammie, a senior, won the individual title at the Heather Farr Memorial last week.
She was the first Rainbow Wahine golfer to win a tournament since 1986.
Gammie is ranked No. 36 in the nation with a 72.46 scoring average.
» Hawaii-Hilo finished fifth in the Western Washington Invitational women's golf tournament at Bellingham, Wash.
The Vulcans' Jayna Shimomura tied for eighth at 242.
» The Hawaii-Hilo men's team is in 15th place after three rounds of the District Seven Shootout in Las Vegas.
Jonathan Hirata of the Vulcans is tied for 62nd.
Vulcans lose soccer match to Embry-Riddle
Emrby Riddle beat Hawaii-Hilo 2-1 yesterday in women's soccer at Phoenix.
Karen Weatherby, on a pass from Kelly White, scored the Vulcans' only goal.
