PetWalk is healthy activity for dogs as well as the animals’ owners
Hawaiian Humane Society
Health experts will tell you that 30 minutes of physical activity every day can make you healthier and happier, and that having a walking companion is key to a successful exercise program.
This Sunday morning is PetWalk, the Hawaiian Humane Society's once-a-year event that could kick-start your program, using your dog as your walking partner.
Question: I know I should exercise, but how do I get motivated to do it?
Answer: Getting moving is easier said than done. For inspiration, look at that furry lump of love sitting by your feet. A half-hour walk with your dog burns 80 calories, reduces your risk of cancer and improves your mood.
Q: Is it good for the dog, too?
A: Yes, canines crave the stimulating sights, sounds and scents that only the outdoors can provide. Walking also promotes a healthy, social temperament as the dog meets other dogs and people.
Q: What's happening this Sunday at PetWalk?
A. Hawaiian Humane Society supporters from across the island will gather for a 2-mile morning walk led by Central Pacific Bank's loyalty officer, "Alex." CPB and Hawaiian Telcom are sponsoring this charity walk, which is anticipated to raise more than $130,000 for the society's programs.
Q: What if I don't have a dog?
A: Lots of people attend PetWalk without an animal. Everyone enjoys seeing the many pets, mostly dogs but also sociable cats, rabbits, birds and turtles, as well as the pet costume contest.
