Thielen taps Djou to oversee campaign
State Rep. Cynthia Thielen announced yesterday that Honolulu City Councilmember Charles Djou would serve as the campaign chairman for her U.S. Senate campaign.
Djou, who represents the district that extends from Waikiki to Hawaii Kai, was re-elected to the City Council in the primary election.
Thielen said Djou's appointment would be the first in a string of events in the next several days as her campaign gears up to face U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, a Democrat, in November.
Thielen was announced on Sept. 26 to be the replacement for Republican candidate Jerry Coffee, who withdrew before the primary election because of illness.
"It was an honor for me to serve in the state House with Cynthia, where I saw firsthand her commitment to building a two-party democracy in Hawaii, her work to preserve the environment and her belief in clean government," Djou said.
Flu shots offered for at-risk patients
The Muscular Dystrophy Association will offer flu shots to people who are diagnosed with any of more than 40 neuromuscular diseases the organization covers in its research and services programs.
"Both children and adults whose respiratory systems may already be weakened are at special risk from flu-related respiratory infections," Valeri Cwik, association medical director and vice president of research, said in a news release.
"For that reason, MDA provides flu shots to reduce their chances of acquiring an additional and possibly life-threatening illness," Cwik said.
It is especially hazardous for people with muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, to get the flu.
For more information on how to get a flu shot for someone with a neuromuscular disease, call the Muscular Dystrophy Association at 593-4454.
