2 candidates for Kauai mayor challenging victory by Baptiste
LIHUE » Kauai mayoral candidate John Hoff went to the Hawaii Supreme Court yesterday to challenge the results of last week's mayoral primary.
Hoff, who finished third in the race, wants the state to audit the results, which gave Kauai Mayor Bryan Baptiste the win with the majority of the vote, plus two. He needed the majority plus one to avoid a runoff with second-place finisher Jesse Fukushima.
Fukushima decided Friday not to challenge the election.
Hoff also brought a challenge filed by fifth-place finisher Janee Marie Taylor.
Hoff said he filed his challenge to "keep the integrity of the system" and questioned the reliability of the two types of the electronic voting.
Taylor did not return calls for comment.
