Nitta enjoys ‘golden’ moment
Senior midfielder Jolie Nitta scored the "golden goal" at 106:10 in the final overtime period to avoid a draw and lift the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific Cougars to a 3-2 road victory over No. 6 Lee (Tenn.) last Friday at the Lady Flames Classic in Cleveland, Tenn.
Nitta (Mililani '02) came up with a loose ball and poked it past the Lee goalkeeper to give Azusa Pacific its second straight win over a Top 10-ranked opponent. She also assisted on APU's first goal.
Nitta, who leads the Cougars with five assists, and Sarah Yoro (Mililani), a sophomore midfielder, each had assists Tuesday as APU improved to 7-0 with a 5-0 win over Biola.
Yoro has scored twice this year. Taryn Apo (Baldwin), a senior striker has two assists and Mari Kasamoto, a senior midfielder from Iolani, has appeared in two matches.
» Christian Marston (Kapaa), a senior midfielder who has started seven matches, and Tom Culver (Maryknoll), a sophomore midfielder who has made six starts, each have a goal for the 6-1 Vanguard Lions.
Culver, a transfer this year from Grossmont College, hit a game-winner at 82:30 on Sept. 19 to give the Lions a 1-0 win over Westminister. He took a pass from Daniel Ybarra just inside the box and drove the ball into the lower left corner.
» Junior Jennifer Lau scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season at 17:51 as Wellesley (4-2 overall) edged Coast Guard 1-0 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference season opener for both teams Sept. 21.
Lau (Punahou '04), a junior striker, assisted on the first goal and scored the third goal as the Blue blanked UMass-Dartmouth 3-0 on Tuesday.
» Dustin Taniguchi, a 2005 Kamehameha grad, has started every match as a freshman defender for the California Baptist Lancers.
» Dylan Langley (Iolani '06) scored in his first college match for Swarthmore College when the Garnet beat Delaware State 8-1 to open the season on Sept. 2.
» Amy Lawson (Iolani) is the leading scorer for the Westmont Warriors (5-3) with five goals and two assists for 12 points. She was named the Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 17 after scoring three goals and assisting on the first as Westmont rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat Menlo 4-2 on Sept. 16.
Westmont is ranked No. 7 in the latest NAIA poll.
» David Semenza (Punahou '03) made his first start Sept. 14 for the 5-1-1 Brown Bears and blanked No. 19 Boston U. 1-0 . The senior goalkeeper made five saves.
» Both goals scored by Marie Majkut (Punahou '04) for the Washington & Jefferson College Presidents have been match-winners in 3-1 victories over Pittsburgh-Greensburg and Muskingum.
