Chinatown is the place to be this weekend
IT'S A little hard to believe that it was just two years ago that
Gelareh Khoie took her first steps in helping to revitalize Chinatown.
Ever since it opened in 2004, thirtyninehotel has been credited with helping to bring a mainstream following to Hotel Street. The subsequent addition of NextDoor and Bar 35 to the area has provided strength in numbers as the neighborhood continues its transformation.
Khoie and partners Richard Ralya and DJ Harvey will host thirtyninehotel's second anniversary celebration on Saturday, with famed New York party DJ Nicky Siano returning to spin alongside Harvey from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Congrats to all of them for making the venue a success for the past two years and becoming a pillar of the Chinatown arts and entertainment scene ...
THIS WEEKEND gets off to a good start, thanks to KTUH's Jake the Snake. He'll host "On the 1: Special Delivery" on Friday, a free show at the University of Hawaii-Manoa's Hemenway Courtyard. All ages are invited to sample some of the best in local hip-hop, with Soul Pacific, the Audible Lab Rats, Vitalsee and Tempo Valley joined by DJs Kavet the Catalyst and Observ starting at 7 p.m. ...
BACK IN Chinatown, local band X-Factor will play its final Oahu show on Friday before heading for the mainland. They'll be joined at Ong King by Jammarek, Quadraphonix and the Shakti Dancers. 21-and-over are welcome at this one; doors open at 9 p.m. ...

WHILE IT'S the end of another month, don't expect to see
Russell Tanoue at the Ocean Club hosting "The Piranha Room" this weekend.

After five years at the Restaurant Row nightclub, the popular fashion photographer and VIP party host has decided to call it quits at in order to follow his friend Beau Mohr to Pearl at Ala Moana Center. Look for Tanoue to start throwing parties there, possibly as soon as next month ...
DETOX'S MONTHLY "Wormwood" party takes it back to the old school on Saturday, focusing on the hip-hop golden era of the '80s and early '90s. DJs Fame, D-Kre and Sir Style lead the charge, with Big Mox and Kristyles sharing hosting duties and performances by the Lionz of Zion and the Waikiki B-Boys.
"Wormwood" is also a showcase for local artists, with more than 15 of them signed up to display their work. Doors open at 9 p.m. for those 16 and over, with a $5 cover in effect ...
