No. 1 Punahou faces No. 2 Saint Louis tomorrow

Both are unbeaten in the ILH after challenging slates against nonconference opponents

Even in the macho world of football, there are spin-meisters and policy-makers.

Until the creation of the crossover games between the best of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and Oahu Interscholastic Association, many decision-makers were content to have their Top 10 team roll over smaller, less gifted programs in August. To a certain point, and due mainly to financial constraints, neighbor island teams have a limited menu of upper-echelon opponents before league play starts.

Punahou had none of that. The Buffanblu faced defending state champion Kahuku and won. They visited Raymond Torii Field at Waianae and posted a tough victory. Then, they hit the road, not for a bus ride to Aloha Stadium, but a flight over the pond to Seattle. After defeating Eastlake, then ranked No. 1 in Washington state, the Buffanblu came home to recharge and refocus.

Last week's thrilling 14-13 win over Kamehameha gave the Buffanblu (4-0, 1-0 ILH) wins over four outstanding teams. The gauntlet continues tomorrow when No. 1 Punahou faces unbeaten and second-ranked Saint Louis (4-0, 1-0 ILH). Kickoff at Aloha Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Crusaders haven't taken any easy roads, either. The Crusaders downed No. 10 McKinley, Leilehua and Castle in crossover games before outlasting Kamehameha two weeks ago. Scott Smith has emerged as a force, using his 6-foot-6 frame as a weapon on the defensive line. His performance has boosted a defense that was already stellar with linebacker Jacob Barit, defensive end Solomona Aigamaua and safety Manoa Latu.

Saint Louis has not won the ILH since 2003, but has since added the flex option to its playbook. Punahou has seen little of that offense so far, but isn't lacking for speed defensively. Sophomore Manti Te'o had five of his team's eight sacks against Kamehameha.

The Buffanblu, using four-receiver and offset I formations, turned to another sophomore, Dalton Hilliard. He emerged as a durable running back, amassing 64 tough yards on 17 carries.

Here's a look at tomorrow's other matchups:

OIA RED EAST

No. 5 Kahuku vs. No. 4 Farrington, Mililani Stadium -- The last time they met, the Governors had a late-season hot streak and dreams of a state-tournament berth. Kahuku doused Farrington 35-0, and the Govs went on to lose an elimination game to Waianae. No state tourney for the Govs, and Kahuku went on to win its fourth state crown in six years.

Things have changed. An early start to school meant far fewer academic casualties for coach Randall Okimoto, and his Govs are riding a dominant defense in the Red East. Dealing with Kahuku, again, though, will test the mettle of his now-seasoned squad.

Lene Aumua rushed for 145 yards last week, and Kahuku will probably stick to basics.

"They don't need to throw. They run well," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "It'll be their strength against our strength."

Farrington (4-1, 3-0) has gone 2-0 since quarterback Elijah Filifili injured his hand at practice. Maeli Siliga has been capable in wins over Kailua and Kalaheo. Kahuku's defense, however, will do more to slow down running backs Hercules Sula and Joshua Fernandez. The pressure will be on Siliga and his veteran offensive line.

Meanwhile, Kahuku (3-2, 2-1) is coming off a stunning 14-13 loss to McKinley. The Red Raiders are practically unbeatable on their home field, but this game is on a neutral site for TV purposes. Defensive tackle Kaniela Tuipulotu leads a young, improving defensive unit that will face a Farrington O-line that is almost as big as Kahuku's.

Filifili has been working out without pads, but remains unlikely to play tomorrow.

"We might lose a few guys to grades. We'll find out (today)," Okimoto added.

No. 10 McKinley at Moanalua -- Two good friends and former colleagues square off when ex-Moanalua offensive coordinator Bobby Grey brings his Tigers (3-2, 2-1) to visit Big Blue. When Grey departed last spring, Moanalua coach Arnold Martinez opened up his offense a bit with a new OC, but Grey knows the anatomy of Na Menehune in just about every way. Moanalua (2-3, 1-2) will have to neutralize Tilton Kaluna, one of the more instinctive, heady quarterbacks in the league. McKinley's defense hasn't quite faced a bruising quarterback like Jordan Monico.

"Defensively, their linebackers and secondary are physical, athletic, and have great team speed," said Saint Louis coach Delbert Tengan, whose team faced McKinley in nonconference play. "That is a very lethal combination for any offense to deal with."

Kalaheo at Kailua -- A short drive separates these two old rivals, both on the upswing this year. The Mustangs (1-5, 0-4) play all their home games at Kailua, which makes this truly a game for local bragging rights. The Surfriders (2-4, 1-3) threw only three passes in a 21-14 loss to Castle last week.

OIA RED WEST

Campbell at Radford -- Both teams have been highly competitive since moving up from Division II this season. They certainly aren't strangers to each other. Campbell (2-3, 0-3) held on to beat Radford 18-13 late in the regular season last year, but fell to the Rams (1-4, 0-3) in the playoffs 7-0 and missed the state tourney.

Kapolei at Leilehua -- The Hurricanes (2-3, 2-1) are riding high on last week's homecoming win over Campbell, but the Mules (3-2, 2-1) are well-rested and a bit ornery after being shut out by Waianae two weeks ago. The 'Canes won last year's matchup 33-7, but Leilehua quarterback Bryant Moniz missed the game with an injured shoulder. When Moniz last played against Kapolei in 2004, the Mules won 43-23.

OIA WHITE

Waipahu vs. Kalani, Kaiser Stadium -- A year ago, the Marauders crossed town (3-1, 3-2) and defeated the Falcons 38-12. Kalani (0-6, 0-5) will contend with Waipahu's bullish back, Keo Palimo'o, who was held to a season-low 50 yards on 12 attempts last week at Pearl City.

BIIF

Hawaii Prep at Keaau -- The resurgent Cougars (2-3, 2-2) enter homecoming night with an eye on a playoff berth in the BIIF Division I chase. Bronson Kaneao ran for 150 yards and three touchdowns in Keaau's win over Waiakea. Jung Park, HPA's reliable kicker, could be the difference for Ka Makani (2-3, 2-2) in another close game. He nailed three field goals last week in a win over Kohala.

Ka'u at Honokaa -- Joel Galdeira, Honokaa's sophomore quarterback, ran for 100 yards to lead the Dragons (3-2, 3-1) in last week's win over Hilo. Ka'u (0-4, 0-4) is seeking its first win.

KIF

Waimea vs. Kapaa , Vidinha Stadium -- The Menehunes (3-1, 1-1) have had two weeks to lament a 30-point loss to first-place Kauai. The Warriors (1-3, 0-2), meanwhile, are coming off a 51-6 loss to Kauai.
