PET OHANA
Many options available to find lost pet
Hawaiian Humane Society
Question: When my pet goes missing, who do I call?
Answer: The Hawaiian Humane Society is Oahu's official pet lost-and-found center. Last year alone, the Society reunited more than 4,000 animals with their families.
Q: What else can I do?
A: Search your home and neighborhood thoroughly.
File a lost-animal report; visit the Humane Society in person and bring a photo of your pet.
Advertise your lost pet in the newspaper, call your radio station and try to get a TV station to do a story.
Check the "found" ads in the newspaper every day.
Make fliers with your pet's photo and give them to local mail carriers, veterinary clinics and stores.
Keep visiting the Hawaiian Humane Society every other day to look for your pet in person, or check the new Web pages daily.
When you find your pet, call the Society immediately at 946-2187, ext. 2.
Q: How was this made possible?
A: A $10,000 grant from Hawaiian Telcom covered the cost of expanding the Hawaiian Humane Society's Web site and adding new features to the lost-and-found section.
Q: How has the Internet made a difference?
A: The posting of found-pet photos is particularly important because every minute counts when pets are missing. Since they face dangers from traffic and predators, lost animals are as anxious as their families to return home.
The lucky strays that arrive at the Hawaiian Humane Society wait for a holding period as determined by law. Pets without ID are held for a minimum of 48 hours before being eligible for adoption. Stray pets with a tag, microchip or other form of ID are held for a minimum of nine days.
