Storm water reuse to be studied
State and federal government agencies will jointly study ways to capture and reuse storm-water runoff in Hawaii, the Department of Land and Natural Resources said in a release. Benefits of storm-water reuse include reducing demand on potable water sources and reducing the amount of sediment runoff on coral reefs, DLNR Director Peter Young said in the release. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation will provide $400,000 to pay for the project.

Home blaze does $700,000 in damage
HANAPEPE, Kauai » A fire gutted a home in Hanapepe Valley on Tuesday night, causing an estimated $700,000 in damage and leaving only an interior stairwell and two walls standing.
No one was home at the time of the fire, and no one was injured, fire officials said.
The fire started at about 7 p.m. in the 3,100-square-foot, two-story wooden home and storage shed, officials said. Embers from an unattended wood-burning water heater ignited leaves and twigs nearby.
Firefighters from Hanapepe, Kalaheo, Lihue and Waimea stations were called to the blaze, which was extinguished at about 1:10 a.m.
The two families that were living in the home were meeting with the American Red Cross yesterday to discuss their needs, said Alfred Darling, executive director of the Kauai branch of the American Red Cross.
"We want to help them get through this ordeal, and see what their options are," Darling said.
Fire officials said the damage to the home and the storage shed is estimated at $500,000, with another $200,000 in valuables lost by the families.

Speed cited in fatal crash of stolen car
The city Medical Examiner's Office has identified the 19-year-old Waianae man who died Tuesday from injuries he suffered when the stolen car he was driving crashed in Makaha, police said.
Brandon Mizuta-Cabral died from multiple internal injuries due to a car accident, the Medical Examiner's Office said.
The crash happened at 3:54 a.m. in the Honolulu-bound lane of Farrington Highway near Upena Street.
Police said Mizuta-Cabral was Honolulu-bound in a 1994 Honda when the car veered left off the roadway, hit mailboxes and a rock wall, then overturned.
Excessive speed was an apparent factor in the crash, police said.
Mizuta-Cabral was taken in critical condition to the Queen's Medical Center, where he died at 2:20 p.m.
Store break-in leads to arrest of 3 teens
