Warriors' offense had a new look in 1-point loss to Punahou
Kamehameha's offense showed some new looks in the football showdown against Punahou on Saturday.
In fact, the Warriors made key adjustments in the second half, shutting off the open lanes that had given Punahou eight sacks of quarterback Michael Hoke. By employing a wing on the same side of their tight end, the Warriors gave Hoke time, and he came through with 192 passing yards (11-for-19), a very efficient night on the Aloha Stadium FieldTurf.
Unfortunately, the 14-13 loss left Kamehameha down, though not out, in the Division I race of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.
"We made a lot of mistakes. Blocking assignments. I wasn't making the right reads," Hoke said.
The Warriors remained at No. 3 in the Top 10, but that won't help them in their quest for the ILH crown, especially since the top two teams are from their league.
Until Kamehameha adjusted, Punahou often stuffed the box with eight defenders. Blazing-fast sophomore linebacker Manti Te'o finished with five sacks. Even after the Warriors added more protection, the lack of a deep threat was obvious.
Last year, Aaron Nichols had touchdowns of 90 and 80 yards against Punahou. The wide receiver now plays for Oregon State.
"I am so glad Aaron Nichols has graduated," Punahou coach Kale Ane said.
Colts of the Week:
There were no less than three Colts on the gridiron over the weekend.
Kamehameha-Hawaii's Kolten Wong ran for 109 yards in limited action as the Warriors defeated Ka'u 56-6.
Colton Wong of Ka'u -- no relation -- had just 9 rushing yards on six carries.
Then there's Colten Quinabo, one of Baldwin's fleet-footed run-and-shoot receivers. He caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Helle to jump-start the Bears in a 39-13 victory over Pac-Three.
All in all, a busy weekend for the Colts. The Kalaheo Mustangs lost to Farrington 35-17.
No word yet on stallions, mares or ponies.
And the Leilehua Mules did not play.
