Coach and former athlete Frias dies of cancer
Memorial services for Doug Frias, a prominent athlete at Punahou in the 1960s and a highly-regarded coach at Saint Louis for decades, will be held tomorrow at St. Patrick's Catholic Church beginning at 5 p.m. with services at 8. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Friday at Oahu Cemetery.
He died Sept. 20 at age 56, ending a battle with cancer. Frias was an Interscholastic League of Honolulu all-star running back in football and guard in basketball at Punahou. In college, he played football at Willamette (Ore.) and the University of Hawaii.
At Willamette, his offensive coordinator was Cal Lee, who went on to be head football coach at Saint Louis and lead the Crusaders to the most wins and championships in Hawaii high school football history.
When Frias returned to Hawaii, he began a long, mostly behind-the-scenes coaching career at Saint Louis. Frias coached intermediate and junior varsity football at Saint Louis, helping prepare players for the Crusaders' varsity team during their long championship run.
"His heart was with Saint Louis," said Ron Lee, Cal's brother and longtime Saint Louis offensive coordinator. "He really helped us build the program. We're going to really miss him. He's always been around."
Frias also coached Division II varsity basketball at Saint Louis.
"He was a good coach," said UH football player Ross Dickerson. "He was very understanding about football being my first love, but I learned a lot about basketball from him."
