Security gets $1.3 million boost
Hawaii will receive $1.3 million in Department of Homeland Security grants to make ports more secure, protect important facilities and beef up transit security in Honolulu.
The state Harbors Division will get $1.07 million for port security. Another grant sets aside $189,000 for buffer zone protection around facilities such as power plants and fuel storage tanks. Honolulu will receive $50,020 for transit security.
Power outage hits areas in Kaneohe
An outage darkened Windward Mall and Kawa Street in Kaneohe yesterday.
Stores were closing, and refunds were being offered to movie-goers.
Hawaiian Electric Co. received calls beginning at 7:19 p.m.
HECO spokesman Jose Dizon said 165 customers in the mall and on Kawa Street were affected.
Power was restored shortly after 9 p.m.
HECO technicians found the problem in an underground cable last night and rerouted electricity through another line to the area.

Maui Prep gets $100,000 from bank group
Maui Preparatory Academy received a $100,000 commitment from the
First Hawaiian Bank Foundation, to be paid over three years. The funds will be used for a multi-purpose sports court. The West Maui school is open to students from pre-K through the ninth grade.
The North Shore Country Market, a nonprofit organization, received $20,000 from the Hawaiian Electric Industries Charitable Foundation to establish an organic farm and training center for youth and families to become organic farmers, growers and entrepreneurs.

Mo-ped driver killed on Big Isle after hitting truck
KAILUA-KONA » A Big Island man was killed yesterday when the mo-ped he was driving in the Kohanaiki Industrial Park north of Kailua-Kona struck the back of a parked pickup truck about 8:35 a.m., police said.
The victim was identified as Scott Fienup, 47, of no permanent address.
Police said they believe driver inattention was a factor in the accident.
The accident is the 28th traffic fatality of the year on the Big Island, compared to 29 at the same time last year.
Highway closures expected in Maui fire
WAILUKU » Firefighters have opened a rural highway in south Maui, but expect to have periodic closures as helicopters assist in battling a stubborn blaze that that has burned thousands of acres of brush.
Fire Capt. Jeff Murray said yesterday there were several hot sports on the western side of the fire but there did not appear to be hot spots at the highest elevation of the burned area.
Hawaiian homesteaders were allowed to return to their homes at Kahikinui on Monday.
Firefighters cut fire breaks around their houses, and none was damaged, officials said.
The fire started in five separate places late Saturday night.

Driver in Wahiawa car chase is arrested
Police arrested a 23-year-old man who allegedly led police on a chase into a Wahiawa pineapple field in a stolen car earlier this month.
Police said the man was seen by officers driving a stolen car at the Wahiawa District Courthouse at about 10 a.m. Sept. 14.
The officers tried to confront him, but he sped away in a reckless manner and led the officers on a chase into a nearby pineapple field, where he escaped after abandoning the car, police said.
Police found him Monday at his grandmother's house and arrested him for investigation of auto theft, driving without a license, reckless driving and fraudulent use of license plates.
Drive-through patron caught with stolen car
Police arrested a 26-year-old man at Wahiawa fast-food restaurant drive-through because he was allegedly driving a stolen car.
Patrol units were called to investigate a complaint about a suspicious car at about 3:35 a.m. Sunday.
The officers learned that the car had been reported stolen.
After the driver pulled into the drive-through lane, officers moved in and arrested him for investigation of auto theft and third-degree promotion of dangerous drugs.

14-year-old boy arrested in auto theft
Police arrested a 14-year-old boy for allegedly driving a stolen car in Waimanalo.
Police said the boy was seen driving recklessly about 4 p.m. Monday. He was stopped by patrol officers and tried to run away, but was caught.
Officers later determined that the car he was driving was stolen.
Police then arrested the boy for auto theft.

Traffic stop leads to arrest of 2 men
Police arrested two men for investigation of firearm charges following a routine traffic stop in Makiki on Monday.
Police said an officer pulled the car over after noticing an expired safety sticker and registration sticker on the car about 4:45 a.m.
The officer noticed marijuana on the floor of the car and then arrested the two men inside, ages 26 and 39.
After the suspects agreed to have their car searched, the officer found a loaded handgun that had been reported stolen in a burglary earlier this year.
The men were then arrested for investigation of firearm charges, including being felons in possession of a firearm.
Man seen damaging 10 cars in Iwilei
Police arrested an 18-year-old man who allegedly damaged 10 cars in an Iwilei parking lot.
Police said that at about 3:30 a.m. Monday, a witness saw the man cutting the tires on five vehicles at 666 N. King St.
The man then cut the tire and smashed the windshield of a car parked on the street, police said.
The man then crossed the street and cut the tires on four other vehicles, according to the witness.
Police were called, and they arrested the man for investigation of second-degree criminal property damage.

Male suspect sought in beach robbery
Police were looking for a man who robbed another man at gunpoint early Monday.
Police said the victim, 45, was sitting in his car at a beach park at 92-271 Farrington Highway near Kahe Point about 12:15 a.m. when another man approached him, pointed a gun at him and demanded money.
The suspect fled in a white vehicle with cash, police said. He was described only as a man 18 to 20 years old.
