Akaka enjoys Wong's party at Pineapple Room Sunday
DESPITE a grueling campaign, Sen.
Daniel Akaka showed up at
Alan Wong's New Wave Luau II party in the Pineapple Room Sunday evening, the day after winning his toughest victory. "It's a privilege to be here," the modest senator said after receiving an ovation from the pro-Akaka crowd. "Thank you for supporting Alan -- and for supporting me, too." The senator enjoyed Hawaiian songs by his son
Danny Jr., Danny Kaleikini, Palani Vaughan and the group
Mahiehie, made up of
Helene Woodward, Mark Tang and
Sam Kaina. Junior's wife,
Anna, danced hula. "This is so relaxing," the senator said. The younger Akaka gave the invocation for the party, as he has done so often for Alan's functions.
Emme Tomimbang was emcee. She and KITV's
Pamela Young, a fashion plate in a sleek black top and pants, had their cameramen with them. It was the seventh anniversary of the Pineapple Room in Macy's. Alan turned the celebration into a benefit for Hawaii's Plantation Village. He invited his past and present chefs each to prepare a dish. "When you have a luau like this it brings people together," he said. "Eat, drink and be merry -- it's a Hawaiian thing." Donating food and beverages were: Southern Wine & Spirits, Better Brands, JMD Beverages, Icon Estates, Wing Sing, Swift and Co., Hamakua Springs Country Farms Mushrooms, Maui Cattle Co., Edsung Foodservice, Armstrong Produce and Honolulu Poi Co. ...
