Maui Republican who lost by 20 votes considers recount
WAILUKU » A Republican candidate on Maui who lost by 20 votes in the primary election said she is inclined to ask for a recount.
Kay Ghean, who lost to Dr. Ben Azman, 300 votes to her 280, said yesterday she will know for sure whether to put in a formal request for a recount after talking with her campaign team.
Ghean said she had no doubts about the election process and did not think the recount would change the results by much.
But she said when the vote is that close, a recount is usually requested.
"To me it's a formality," she said.
Ghean, a former chairwoman of the Republican Party of Maui, said she is prepared to support Azman in the general election.
The Republican winner will be facing Angus McKelvey, who unseated incumbent state Rep. Kam Tanaka (D, West Maui-North Kihei) in the primary election.
McKelvey is publisher of the Maui Historical Walking Guide and has been an award-winning designer of Internet Web pages.
