Punahou's Manti Te'o lunged for the end zone for a third-quarter score last night against Kamehameha.

Buffanblu barely get by Warriors
Kahuku's loss is Punahou's gain.
Manti Te'o, a transfer from Kahuku, made a world of difference in every phase of Punahou's 14-13 win over Kamehameha last night.
The 6-foot-1, 210-pound sophomore blocked a punt that Kimo Makaula turned into a touchdown, and had five sacks to lead the top-ranked Buffanblu over No. 4 Kamehameha.
The win gave defending Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Punahou (4-0 overall) a successful start to the conference season. Kamehameha, meanwhile, faces a tough road after losses in its first two league games.
When Kamehameha pulled within 14-13 on Ryan Montez's 1-yard run with 2:50 left, Punahou's young defense stepped up. After the Buffanblu were called for encroachment, the ball moved half the distance. Kamehameha, which had planned to kick for one point, called time out and decided to go for two points.
"We already had one loss, so a tie's not gonna help us," Kamehameha coach Kanani Souza said. "We need to control our destiny to win. I thought we could get it. We came to win. If we make it, it's a great call."
Punahou defensive tackle J.J. Autele and safety Siu Tafuna, both juniors, stopped Montez on the Warriors' ensuing try. Autele got into the backfield to snag Montez low, while Tafuna squared up and brought the hard-running back down.
"I stayed upfield, swam the tackle and I saw 23 come to me. I just went for his legs and tried to hold on," Autele said.
"I knew he was gonna cut back," Tafuna said. "He ran the touchdown like that."
Montez was stopped a yard short. "It's a tough call and they felt the need to go for it," Punahou coach Kale Ane said. The defensive guru had his unit stuffing the box with eight defenders, limiting Kamehameha to 62 rushing yards on 28 carries. Punahou had eight sacks in all.
Conversely, Punahou's offensive line allowed just one sack.
"Our line did good against a team that's physical and fast," Kan said. "Dalton had a great game."
After stopping the Warriors on the PAT, Punahou ran out the final minutes of play. Hilliard put the game on ice by bolting for a 16-yard run on third and 15.
There were plenty of keys for the Buffanblu. Sophomore Dalton Hilliard ran for 64 yards on 17 carries against one of the state's top defensive units. Quarterback Brett Kan only passed for 112 yards, but was turnover-free.
The first half was a battle of wills. Kamehameha's stellar defense did not allow a point, but Punahou jumped to an early lead anyway.
Te'o made his presence felt almost immediately. The sophomore surged up the middle and blocked a punt by Kamahanaokala Tim Sing, allowing Kimo Makaula to pick up the bouncing ball and race into the end zone from 7 yards out. That gave the Buffanblu a 7-0 lead with 9:19 to play in the opening quarter.
"That's the first time I ever blocked a punt. They tried to block me, but I sidestepped it," said Te'o, who attended Punahou in seventh and eighth grades before returning to Kahuku as a freshman. After that, he decided to return to Punahou for good.
The Buffanblu offense came to life in the third quarter. Miah Ostrowski, playing on an injured ankle, hauled in a 26-yard pass on fourth and 4. That gave Punahou first down at the Kamehameha 7-yard line, and Te'o scored on the next play on a toss sweep to the left.
River Kim's extra-point kick gave Punahou a 14-7 lead with 6:42 remaining in the third quarter.
No. 8 Iolani 24, Pac-Five 14
The Raiders were outgained, but not outplayed. Despite Pac-Five's edge in total yardage -- 351 to Iolani's 288 -- the Raiders came through with an unlikely source of victory.
Iolani's defense, pummeled in the first half, allowed just 33 rushing yards (2.4 per attempt) in the second. Pac-Five's Jordan Ho-Ching, who rushed for 130 yards in the first half, had just one carry for 10 yards after the break, and the Iolani defense came up with four interceptions and a fumble recovery.
Iolani's offense wasn't smooth, but made enough plays and had just two turnovers. Justin Yamamoto rushed for 182 yards on 29 carries. Kela Marciel, a sophomore, had two of his team's interceptions.
