Hawaii surfers advance in France
Local surfers Andy and Bruce Irons, and Fredrick Patacchia each won their respective first-round heats to advance into the third round of the Quicksilver Pro France yesterday in Landes, France.
Hawaii's Pancho Sullivan and Roy Powers each placed last in their heats and will compete in the second round tomorrow, surf permitting.
Bruce Irons earned the highest mark of the day with a score of 19.57, while Andy Irons posted a 16.24.
Rainbows, Seasiders win BYUH Invitational titles
The University of Hawaii women's cross country team took the top three spots as the Rainbow Wahine won the women's division of the Brigham Young-Hawaii Invitational yesterday at Laie.
UH's Chantelle Laan took the race in a time of 18:37, followed by teammates Sharlene Carillo (19:29) and Tava Tedesco (19:33). The Rainbows finished with a score of 31, followed by BYU-Hawaii (44), Hawaii Pacific (69) and Chaminade (85).
In the men's race, the Seasiders won with a score of 27, beating out Hawaii Pacific (38) and Chaminade (73). HPU's Todd Iacovelli won the individual title with a time of 25:48.
Warriors finish 14th at Tucker Intercollegiate
Pierre-Henri Soero finished in 14th place to lead the University of Hawaii men's golf team to a 14th-place team finish in the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate yesterday at Albuquerque, N.M.
Soero shot a 4-over 76 in yesterday's third round to finish at 4 over for the tournament.
>>Hawaii-Hilo posted a two-round score of 883 to finish in second place in the St. Martin's Tournament at Tumwater, Wash., yesterday. Grand Canyon edged the Vulcans to take the title by two strokes.
Brigham Young-Hawaii finished last in the 10-team tournament with a score of 966.
Seasiders sweep past NDNU
Michelle Peters slammed down a match-high 16 kills as the Brigham Young-Hawaii women's volleyball team defeated Notre Dame de Namur yesterday at Laie, 30-16, 30-16, 30-26.
Noelle Filimoeatu added 13 kills to help the Seasiders improve to 9-0. Kaala Lo torched NDNU for six aces.
Sea Warriors win first game in rout
Lauren Dignam scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Hawaii Pacific women's soccer team to a 5-0 win over Chaminade yesterday at Atherton Field.
The Sea Warriors improved to 1-2 while the Silverswords fell to 0-2.
McKnight to speak at Quarterback Club
University of Hawaii graduate assistant Dennis McKnight, Star-Bulletin columnist Kalani Simpson, retired UH swimming coach Albert Minn, and junior golf coach Kevin Ralbovski are the scheduled guest speakers at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.
The program starts at noon following an 11:30 a.m. luncheon. The general public is invited.
