Castle’s defense takes advantage of Kailua
Before serenading their coach with a rendition of "Happy Birthday," the Castle Knights presented Nelson Maeda a satisfying gift with a 21-14 victory over Windward Oahu rival Kailua last night at the Surfriders' field.
"It was a little embarrassing," Maeda said after the tribute from his players, "but it is a nice birthday present."
The Knights scored all of their points in the first 4:48 of the game and held off a rally by a short-handed Kailua team to bounce back from last week's 12-9 loss to McKinley.
With the win, Castle evened its overall record at 3-3 and improved to 3-1 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East Conference.
"This was a very pivotal game for us," Maeda said. "Coming off that devastating loss our backs were really against the wall. We had to do some reflective thinking. Fortunately it lit the fire under them and we were able to come out on top in this game."
Kailua (2-4, 1-3) faced some adversity as well this week, as the Surfriders were without starting quarterback Zachary Akamine, and went with a rotation of Jackie Uemoto and Bob Lastimosa under center.
After being knocked on their heels early in the contest, the Surfriders shut out the Knights the rest of the game and closed to within a touchdown with 1:51 left when Billy Oden recovered a blocked punt in the end zone.
But Castle recovered the onside kick to secure the win.
"They had a lot of adversity to overcome and a lot of teams would not have played as well as they did being down 21-0," Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich said. "They came back and fought and fought and came up short. Castle's a top-tier team, so we're pleased with what we saw given all the circumstances."
With the game plan altered, the Surfriders relied heavily on the running game led by Keelan Gonda, who rushed for 76 yards and a touchdown.
But Castle locked down on defense in the second half, and recorded seven of its 10 tackles for loss after the break.
"Our defense played great," Maeda said. "That running back they've got is tough. We're very happy we were able to somewhat contain him."
Castle quarterback Bryson Ukauka completed 13 of 20 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns and ran for the third score.
Scott Keiter-Charles caught four passes for 108 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown reception on the second play of the game when he got behind the secondary running down the right side.
Castle added to the lead after Kailua fumbled the ball away on its first offensive play of the game and the Knights recovered at the Surfriders' 1. Two plays later, Ukauka scored on a quarterback sneak and converted the 2-point conversion to put Castle up 14-0 just 89 seconds into the contest.
Following a Kailua punt and Bronson Kekahuna's 31-yard return, Ukauka's toss down the left sideline eluded the hands of two Kailua defenders and fell into the grasp of Corey Paredes for a 39-yard score.
The Knights offense slowed down after that, giving Kailua a chance to cut into the lead. After the defense pounced on a Castle fumble at the Knights' 9, Gonda scored on a 4-yard run around the right side to close the gap to 21-7 going into halftime.
The defenses controlled the second half and Kailua made things interesting with the touchdown off the blocked punt. But the Knights were able to run out the clock.
Kailua closes the regular season with games against Kalaheo next week and Moanalua the following week. Castle has a bye next week before its showdown with Kahuku on Oct. 6.
