Twilight Ohana on 'Freaky Friday'
The men's and women's basketball teams for the University of Hawaii open their fall practices on Oct. 13 at this year's Twilight Ohana. The theme is "Freaky Friday The 13th" and both squads will dress the part. Admission is free and the doors open at 6:30 p.m. There will be slam-dunk and 3-point shooting contests. The evening will be capped off by the women's scrimmage at 9:30 p.m. and the men's scrimmage at 9:45 p.m.
Prince, Duggins entered in volleyball tourney
Former Hawaii All-American volleyball players Victoria Prince and Lauren Duggins are among the entrants in this weekend's King and Queen of the Beach tournament at Queen's Beach.
Also in the field of 60 players are pro beach players Scott Wong, currently a Rainbow Wahine volunteer coach, and former Hawaii-Hilo All-American Tanya Fuamatu-Anderson.
Play starts at 8 a.m. today and 9 a.m. tomorrow. The championships of the $6,000 event are at 2 p.m.
» Trina Kauliakamoa pounded down 23 kills and Chaminade outlasted Grand Canyon 30-18, 30-32, 22-30, 30-24, 15-11 last night at McCabe Gym. The Silverswords improved to 9-3 with the win.
Seasiders blank Silverswords
The Brigham Young-Hawaii University women's soccer team shut out host Chaminade 4-0 yesterday to improve to 3-1 for the season.
The Seasiders' Heidi Bushman led the way with two goals on six shot attempts. Jill Haar and Emily Mearns added a score apiece as BYUH outshot the Silverswords 24-8 in Chaminade's inaugural match.
UH's Buckley finishes third in sailing event
Shandy Buckley, a senior on the University of Hawaii women's sailing team, placed third at the Pacific Coast Sailing Singlehanded Championships yesterday in Marina Del Rey, Calif.
Two Stanford sailors, Carolyn Young and Even Brown, finished first and second, respectively, with scores of 26 and 29 points. Buckley had 32.
Rainbow Wahine sailors Mallory McCollum finished fifth with 58 points, Becky Mabardy was seventh with 73 and Sarah Dosek placed ninth with 95.
The individual competition marked the opening of the 2006-07 season. The Bryson's Women's Intersectional on Sept. 29 is the first UH team event.
