Trojans take talent to Aiea

Mililani looks to get back to .500 after disappointing start

By Paul Honda

It's a rarity in the fall, but there's no high school football at Aloha Stadium tomorrow night.

From Waianae to Kailua, however, homecoming fun is in store. Four Oahu Interscholastic Association Red games are slated, as well as a key showdown in the White Conference.

Beyond the glitz of homecoming courts and pageantry, it's a time of year when bumps and bruises add up. So do sprains and fractures.

"The key for anybody's success in the West this year is staying healthy," Aiea coach Wendell Say said.

His team has endured its share of lost playing time, particularly to skill-position starters.

The timing is tough, especially with the Mililani Trojans (1-2 Red West) marching to Aiea (2-1 Red West) for a key showdown tomorrow night.

Both teams have slipped out of the Top 10 in recent weeks, but the intensity will be the same when they battle tomorrow. Lofa Liilii didn't post spectacular numbers in his return for Aiea. The Star-Bulletin All-State wide receiver reinjured an ankle while blocking during Aiea's second drive at Radford.

His brother Daniel stepped in admirably with 181 rushing yards on only 11 carries. That took a load off first-year starter Keenan Naeole, who filled in for Alfredo Higa. The senior quarterback is recovering from an infected boil.

"Keenan did an excellent job. Our other kids have been picking up. We've still got to compensate for the losses (to injury)," Say said.

In addition, wide receivers Aldodius Colquitt and Alan Fonoti sat out last week with injuries but will return tomorrow. Lofa Liilii, however, is out indefinitely.

Also out for tomorrow's game is free safety David Savaaetasi (concussion).

Mililani would love to shore up its secondary, but its best defense may be offense. Isaiah Lawelawe and Jordan Torres, the top rusher in the Red West, each ran for more than 100 yards in last week's win over Kapolei.

"They're both good running backs. Lawelawe hits the hole hard. He's more of a power back," Say said. "Torres is just a great running back."

Including nonconference games, Torres has rushed for 726 yards (145.2 per game) and six touchdowns.

Here's a look at more of tomorrow's matchups:

OIA Red West

Radford at No. 7 Waianae -- At 3-0 in the Red West, the seventh-ranked Seariders are one of the hottest teams in the state. A homecoming win over the Rams (0-2 Red West) would solidify their hold of first place in the tumultuous Red West. Joe Abell led the Seariders with 116 yards on the ground on 18 attempts, while the defense was outstanding again. Kaipo Punihaole scored on an interception return for a unit that has allowed only 9 points per game during the win streak.

Radford's balanced attack, featuring wide receiver Kyle Blair, has been remarkable. The senior co-captain has 17 receptions for 339 yards and six touchdowns in four games. Those numbers include last week's eight-catch, 137-yard effort against Aiea.

Campbell at Kapolei -- The Sabers' impressive start in nonconference play has yielded to two losses in the Red West. The good news, though, is that Campbell is well-rested as this game between neighboring rivals awaits. The young Hurricanes, meanwhile, lost some of the wind in their sails after a one-sided loss at Mililani last week.

OIA Red East

Castle at Kailua -- The Knights suffered a 12-9 loss to McKinley last week but are in a good spot in the Red East with a 2-1 record. Kailua, though, is 1-2 in the Red East and could use a victory to strengthen its quest for a playoff spot. The Surfriders' lone victory in league play came against McKinley, 19-8.

OIA White

Kaiser at Waialua -- The Bulldogs (3-1 OIA White), with their nine returning starters from last year's offense, are racking up yardage and points in Division II play. Last week's 62-point, 472-yard outburst against Kalani followed a 33-point, 314-yard effort at Roosevelt. Kaiser (2-1 OIA White) is known for coach Pat Samsonas' run-and-shoot offense, which means this could be a carnival of points at Tosh Nakasone Field.

BIIF

Keaau vs. Waiakea, Wong Stadium -- The erratic Cougars (1-2 BIIF) are coming off the heels of a loss to cross-town rival Kamehameha-Hawaii. Waiakea, meanwhile, is 2-1 in league play. With Kealakehe dominating the league, every victory matters in the battle for home field in the playoffs.

Ka'u at Kamehameha-Hawaii -- Running back Kolten Wong is coming off a 255-yard performance for the Warriors, who finally broke into the win column after two BIIF losses.

No. 9 Kealakehe at Konawaena -- At one time, Konawaena was the only school in the entire district, spanning dozens of miles in any direction. The Wildcats won 11 BIIF titles in a row, dominating the 1980s. Since Kealakehe opened its doors, however, the bulk of students in Kona attend Kealakehe. The Wildcats will be tough at home, but unless quarterback Kawai Kanuha gets time to throw, the visiting Waveriders could overpower their Division II hosts.

KIF

Kauai vs. Kapaa, Vidinha Stadium -- The Red Raiders answered the call by stifling (30-0) Waimea, a team that had won its two nonconference games and a league matchup with Kapaa convincingly. Coach Kelii Morgado certainly expected a much closer game, but Kauai appears on its way to a fourth KIF crown in a row.

MIL

No. 9 Lahainaluna at King Kekaulike -- Na Alii's brilliant start, three lopsided victories, was tempered by last week's shellacking at the hands of defending MIL champion Baldwin. Nonetheless, King Kekaulike has already clinched the league's first-round Division II title. The Lunas, meanwhile, have allowed just six points in their last two games.

Pac-3 vs. Baldwin, War Memorial Stadium -- The Bears' run-and-shoot offense is in pinball-machine mode against any team not named Lahainaluna.
