Troops shipping out can get pet care

THE Hawaiian Humane Society offers a program, "Pets of Patriots," which provides temporary care for pets of military personnel who've been deployed.
We need volunteers willing to foster these pets for six months or longer. If you can share your home, please call Liza at 356-2217.
Question: Who is eligible for "Pets of Patriots"?
Answer: All active-duty military personnel planning for deployment who need foster care for their pets.
Q: Who are the care providers?
A: Community volunteers who have contacted the Hawaiian Humane Society with an interest in providing temporary foster care.
Q: Who is financially responsible for the care of my pet?
A: All of the pet's financial needs are usually taken care of by the pet owner. These financial responsibilities should be agreed upon by both parties prior to deployment.
Q: If I have more than one pet can you keep them together?
A: All efforts will be made to keep pets in the same foster home, but the decision ultimately belongs to the community volunteer.
Q: What if I need help moving my pet to the mainland?
A: The Hawaiian Humane Society will recommend airline carriers with military discounts. In the event that the owner is unable to take the pet to the airport, the society may be able to assist.
Q: How do I sign up?
A: Call the Hawaiian Humane Society Outreach Programs Coordinator 356-2217.
Q: What if I must give up my pet?
A: Come to the Incoming Animals desk (closest to the freeway), open 24 hours, or call Yvette at 356-2228.
Visit any facility that you are considering to see how the animals are kenneled, how clean it is and how helpful the staff is. You may also want to ask for references. We do not board animals at the Hawaiian Humane Society.
