Fill-in fuels Farrington
Farrington's homecoming had more drama than expected last night.
With Governors quarterback Elijah Filifili sidelined with a broken hand, suffered last Thursday at practice, the young Surfriders of Kailua could have spoiled the festivities.
Instead, the Governors' ministry of defense rose to the challenge in a 35-0 rout of the Surfriders last night before a full house at Roosevelt Stadium.
"We faced a little adversity, so we had to step up," defensive end Sam Fehoko said. "We made plays and we even scored (on defense). We played well."
Reserve quarterback Maeli Siliga filled in admirably.
"I was confident in him. He had a great offseason and he's a great leader," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said.
Siliga, who normally starts at wide receiver, passed for 72 yards, ran for 58 more and didn't commit a turnover.
"Losing Filifili was tough. That's like our Peyton Manning," Farrington offensive coordinator Elroy Chong said. "But Maeli works hard and his attitude is team, all the way. Such a wonderful guy."
The No. 5-ranked Governors improved to 2-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East play (3-1 overall). Farrington, which got two touchdowns and 114 yards from reserve running back Joshua Agasiva-Fernandez, amassed 231 rushing yards.
Kailua dropped to 1-2 in conference play (2-3 overall).
"We weren't ready offensively," coach Gary Rosolowich said. "From an execution standpoint, it was like we just landed from Mars. Against a good team like Farrington, you can't do that."
Hercules Sula rushed for 58 yards as the Govs' offensive line set the tempo and controlled the line of scrimmage against a beleaguered Kailua defense. The Surfriders have six starters sidelined due to injury.
Farrington's defense bent a little and never broke, permitting 196 total yards. Keenan Gonda, a 148-pound running back, rushed for 88 hard-earned yards on 18 carries for Kailua. Zachary Akamine was 11-for-23 for 73 yards with two early interceptions.
With Filifili sidelined, Maeli stepped in smoothly. The Governors drove 65 yards in 10 plays, all on the ground. Sula carried the ball on their first six plays from scrimmage, but Agasiva-Fernandez got the touchdown on a 1-yard plunge. After the PAT kick sailed wide, the Govs led 6-0 with 5:42 left in the first quarter.
Moments later, safety Mark Stowers intercepted a pass by Akamine and raced 41 yards to the end zone. After the Surfriders were whistled for having too many players on the field for the PAT, Siliga ran in for two points.
Farrington led 14-0 with 4:48 remaining in the first quarter. Kailua made a goal-line stand late in the first half to stay in the game, and a 48-yard kickoff return by Gonda gave the Surfriders momentum. However, their drive stalled at the Farrington 19-yard line.
"We just couldn't capitalize," Rosolowich said.
The Governors drove 90 yards for their next touchdown, thanks in part to three penalties by Kailua. A pass-interference call and two unsportsmanlike-conduct flags -- including an ejection -- by the Surfriders gave Farrington plenty of help. Siliga connected with Elijah Lesu on a 10-yard play-action touchdown pass to give the Govs a 21-0 lead with 7 seconds left in the third quarter.
Agasiva-Fernandez added a scintillating 68-yard touchdown jaunt to give Farrington a 28-0 lead with 9:08 remaining in the game.
Reserve running back Kelemete Talia rumbled in for a 6-yard touchdown run with 4:52 left.
Filifili, one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the state this season, watched from the sideline. The injury occurred when he threw a ball and his hand came down on a defensive player's helmet. He is expected to miss two to four weeks.
Kailua finished with 113 yards in penalties.
"Some of our guys made some poor decisions," Rosolowich said.
