Crusaders start strong against Warriors
This time, the Saint Louis Crusaders are flying high from the start.
Micah Mamiya raced into the end zone on an 11-yard bootleg with 6:14 left to give Saint Louis a 10-3 win over Kamehameha in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu opener for both teams.
A raucous crowd of 6,310 watched at Aloha Stadium as the Crusaders spoiled the ILH return of Kamehameha coach Kanani Souza. Third-ranked Saint Louis, which has lost its share of early-season league games in recent years, can breathe a bit easier for a change. The Crusaders (4-0 overall) don't play until a showdown with defending league champion Punahou on Sept. 29.
Fourth-ranked Kamehameha (4-1 overall) will face Punahou next Saturday at Aloha Stadium.
Mamiya was efficient, completing 14 of his 28 pass attempts for 193 yards with no turnovers.
"I did all right, not that great, but I'll take the win," the senior said. "Our O-line did good."
After terrorizing opponents in every nonconference game, Kamehameha's defense "only" had three sacks last night.
Offensively, it was a night of frustration.
"We didn't take advantage when we had our chances. I could've done a better job of coaching, and I take responsibility for that," Souza said. "Our defense gave us opportunities. Saint Louis is well-coached and played well. It was about us not executing."
Great field position set up the Crusaders' lone touchdown. After returning a punt to the Kamehameha 43-yard line, Mamiya scrambled for a 21-yard gain. After a personal foul was assessed to the Warriors, Mamiya faked to a running back and sprinted clear into the end zone to give Saint Louis its first lead of the game, 10-3.
Kamehameha drove to the Saint Louis 35, but stalled and punted with 3:08 left. Two plays later, Vaughn Meatoga recovered a fumble by Lene Aumua at the Crusaders' 38-yard line.
The Warriors drove to the 15-yard line with the help of a personal-foul flag on Saint Louis -- the Crusaders had 100 yards in penalties -- but squandered their best opportunity of the night. After a sack by Geordan Hanohano, the eighth Saint Louis sack of the night, Todd Nakano made a diving interception of a pass by Michael Hoke.
That gave the Crusaders the ball at their own 1-yard line with 1:22 remaining. Kamehameha had just one timeout left, and Saint Louis ran out the rest of the clock.
It was a bitter loss for Kamehameha, which began drives inside the Saint Louis 20 twice in the third quarter, only to go backward. On those occasions, Tyler Akao missed field-goal tries of 39 and 31 yards.
Unlike the second half, the first half was somewhat free of penalties, and both defenses dominated. Despite a low snap, Akao drilled 38-yard field goal to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead with 5:17 left in the first quarter.
Kamehameha squandered good field position throughout the first half. Ryan Montez returned three punts for 65 yards, but Saint Louis' defense rose to the occasion. The Crusaders amassed five sacks in the first half, all in the second quarter. Three were by defensive end Scott Smith.
Saint Louis finally scored on its fifth possession of the first half. A 54-yard catch by Kulia Aiona gave the Crusaders first down at the Kamehameha 6-yard line, but the Warrior defense stiffened. Saint Louis settled for a 24-yard field goal, a knuckler that was nearly blocked, but made it through the uprights. The game was tied at 3 with 1:02 left in the second quarter.
Damien 21, Pac-Five 16
Kama Bailey rushed for 159 yards, including a key 80-yard touchdown jaunt to open the second half, as the Monarchs ruled over the Wolfpack.
"We came out flat. We're a young team that's learning from week to week," Damien coach Dean Nakagawa said. Coming off last week's 34-all tie with Iolani, Damien is 1-0-1 in league play (2-2-1 overall). Pac-Five is 0-1 in league action (2-2 overall).
Bailey's long scoring run opened a 21-10 lead for Damien, giving the Monarchs 21 straight points. Their stellar defense, led by seniors Lesao Lakopo and Kaimana Balanon, kept the Pac-Five under wraps for most of the way.
The 'Pack pulled within 21-16 when Bryson Beirne connected with Jordan Ho-Ching on a post pattern for a 36-yard touchdown. Trailing by five, Pac-Five went for the extra-point kick instead of a 2-point PAT, and the attempt missed with 8:57 left to play.
Pac-Five got the ball back twice in the final 6:29. The first series came up short on Beirne's sneak on fourth and 1 at the Damien 40. The 'Pack's final chance ended with a three and out on its own 12 with 1:44 remaining.
Ho-Ching was stymied by Damien cornerback Christian Vasconcellos, a 6-foot, 175-pound junior. Ho-Ching finished with four receptions for 71 yards, while Beirne completed eight of his 24 attempts for 100 yards.
Lakopo and Balanon each had two sacks for Damien.
"We're young, but once we get it going, we can do unbelievable things," said Lakopo, a 5-11, 220-pound linebacker.
"This is very important," Balanon added. "The ILH is really tough, all the teams are good. This is one step toward our goal."
The Wolfpack opened the game with a nine-play, 62-yard drive to paydirt. Spurred by a 27-yard strike by Beirne to Ho-Ching, the 'Pack capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run by Liko Satele.
Pac-Five led 7-0 with 8:54 remaining in the first quarter.
After Wayland Sakamoto missed a 31-yard field-goal try, Pac-Five's offense went back to work. Shandon Augustus' 30-yard carry took the 'Pack into Damien territory, where Josh Mun's 36-yard field goal gave them a 10-0 lead as time expired in the first quarter.
"Pac-Five was coming right through. Coach Kip (Botelho) always has his team prepared," Nakagawa said. "We made some personnel shifts, some small adjustments here and there."
