Carroll outlasts Deigert in golf
Scott Carroll fired a final round 3-under 69 and finished with a one-shot victory over Jason Deigert in the TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship which ended yesterday at the Oahu Country Club.
First-round leader Lance Taketa shot a four-over 76 to finish in a tie for third with Joey Tadeo. For finishing in the top two, both Carroll and Deigert advanced to the National Championship Oct. 26-29 in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Silverswords shut out
Cameron Mertens and Craig Buitrago each scored two goals and Dustin Allbery added four assists as the Seattle University men's soccer team defeated host Chaminade 8-0 yesterday.
Silverswords goalkeeper Darren Smith made 19 saves, but the 2004 national champions proved to be too much as six players scored for the Redhawks.
Wahine golf ties for 14th
Hawaii's Dale Gammie finished in a tie for 18th after finishing with a three-day score of 222 to lead the University of Hawaii women's golf team to a tie for 14th place at the Dick McGuire Invitational held Monday and Tuesday in Albuquerque, N.M.
Arizona State won the tournament with a team score of 7under par, 14 shots ahead of both BYU and UNLV. TCU's Catherine Matranga won the individual title after shooting 214.
Peters earns PacWest honors
BYU-Hawaii junior outside hitter Michelle Peters was named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week yesterday for the second time this season.
Peters averaged 6.83 kills and 3.83 digs per game in leading the 10th-ranked Seasiders to wins over Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade. Peters is averaging 6.56 kills per game for the season while hitting .317.
