Haleiwa man sentenced to 20 years
He stole a woman's car and injured her during the robbery
A 29-year-old Haleiwa man who stole a Bulgarian couple's rental car, and drove off with the nude female hanging on the hood, was sentenced yesterday to 20 years in prison.
Circuit Judge Dexter Del Rosario imposed the maximum sentence on Lanaki Adric for first-degree robbery in the Aug. 22, 2005, North Shore incident that left the woman with cuts and bruises and severed nerves in her fingers, noting that it was fortunate that she did not get killed.
According to prosecutors, the woman was sunbathing nude on a stretch of beach in Mokuleia as her boyfriend swam nearby when Adric arrived in a friend's car and grabbed a camera and car keys on her blanket. She chased after him and tried to get him to stop, but he drove forward, forcing her onto the hood of the rental car.
Prosecutors said Adric tried to shake her off the hood by swerving and driving at high speed on the two-lane road but was unsuccessful. He stopped and pulled her off the car before fleeing toward Haleiwa.
Adric apologized to the court yesterday and asked for forgiveness, saying he could not bring himself earlier to tell the truth. At trial he denied he was the male responsible. The woman and a good Samaritan who went to her aid after hearing her screams and drove after them both identified Adric. Police began looking for him after his friend showed up to retrieve his car after Adric notified him where it was.
Adric had been in court just 40 days before the incident and was granted a deferral of his plea to auto theft and various drug offenses.
