Taketa leads assistant pro golf tournament
Lance Taketa shot a 1-over 73 to take the first-round lead in the Aloha Section TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistant Professional Championship yesterday at the Ko Olina Golf Club.
Taketa leads Shane Abe by one and Joey Tadeo by two.
The tournament is a 36-hole qualifier to determine two spots in the nationals in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Oct. 26-29.
Seasiders move up to No. 10 in poll
Brigham Young-Hawaii moved up four spots to No. 10 in the CSTV/AVCA Division II Top 25 volleyball poll, which was released yesterday.
The Seasiders (6-0) also received one vote as the top team in the nation. They swept defending PacWest Conference champion Hawaii Pacific and conference contender Chaminade last week.
Hirokawa scores 3 TDs for Stags
Mike Hirokawa (Iolani '06) scored three touchdowns in his first college football game last Saturday to help the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags defeat Kenyon College 34-10.
The freshman running back tied the score at 7-7 with a 1-yard run with 5:35 left in the first quarter. He then scored on a 3-yard run around left end 2:17 before the half to put the Stags up 21-10.
Hirokawa's final TD came on a 20-yard pass from quarterback Aaron Gonzales at the 10:40 mark in the third quarter.
He finished with 69 rushing yards on seven carries and caught two passes for 28 yards.
Landon Patoc (Iolani '06), a freshman defensive back, contributed two solo tackles and assisted on six others.
