BENEFIT
Food bank a winner
Last month's "Canstruction" competition at Pearlridge Center generated the donation of 41,108 pounds of food for the Hawaii Foodbank.
Seventeen teams from local architectural firms built sculptures out of canned goods on Aug. 12, and the results were displayed through the month. The public was asked to pick a favorite, voting through their donations -- one can per vote.
Winner of the People's Choice award was "Da Pineapple," by Ferraro Choi and Associates. (The Best of Show, awarded by judges on the day of the competition, was "CATstruction: Join the Fight, End the Hunger 'Meow'!" by In+Form Design, and will be entered in the North American Canstruction competition in 2007.)
The total includes 4,079 pounds collected through the voting, 32,972 pounds used in the sculptures and another 4,057 pounds donated by the event's sponsors. Micah Yuen of Honolulu won a trip for four to Disneyland for his guess that 33,000 pounds of canned goods were used in the sculptures, just 28 pounds shy of the actual weight.
