Wildcats top visiting Wahine in overtime
TUCSON, Ariz. » The Hawaii women's soccer team is still looking for its first goal on the mainland this year.
The Rainbow Wahine put 11 of their 12 shots on goal yesterday, but were denied the net in an evenly played match against the Arizona Wildcats.
Arizona (4-2-0) scored a goal in overtime to edge UH 1-0 and win the Four Points Sheraton Cats Classic.
Glenna DeSaverio took a head pass from Laura Huylebroeck and put the ball past UH goalkeeper Kori Lu with her right foot at 97:46 of the first overtime period for the winner.
The Wahine contended DeSaverio was offside on the play.
"She was offside. I can tell you that," UH coach Pinsoom Tenzing said. "I kept telling the linesman to be in a better position to call offsides."
Pacific (5-0-1) defeated Gonzaga (3-2-1) 1-0 on Laura King's goal at 27:36 to finish second in the tournament.
"We were the better team. We deserved to win, but I don't want to make too much of that because sometimes things do not go as you expect," Tenzing said.
The Wahine (3-2-1) had three good opportunities just before the end of regulation, but Ambree Ako, Taryn Fukuroku and Lehua Wood were all denied by Wildcats goalkeeper Chelsea McIntyre.
"We put balls in the upper right corner and the upper left corner, but their goalkeeper came up very, very big for them," Tenzing said.
"We played a Pac-10 team and we're very unlucky to lose. I feel sorry for the players."
Hawaii travels to Flagstaff, Ariz., today for a match against Northern Arizona (2-3-0) tomorrow night. The Lumberjacks were shut out twice this weekend in the Old National Bank Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ill., by Indiana 1-0 and Rhode Island 3-0.
Freshman midfielder/striker Lindsey Watanabe (Castle '06) has played in all five matches for NAU.
