Native Hawaiian voter rally planned
Two native Hawaiian organizations are holding a voter rally from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Iolani Palace on Saturday to register and encourage native Hawaiians to vote.
Various booths will be set up by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Hawaiian Vote 2006, including a food booth for those with their voter stub, and a voter "telethon" bank to call native Hawaiians and register them to vote.
Entertainment will be provided by Aunty Genoa Keawe, Simplisity and various hula halau. Speakers will be Clyde Namuo, Dee Jay Mailer and Joe Pickard.

State invites hunt for unclaimed goods
State officials will bring the Unclaimed Property Program to the Hawaii Seniors' Fair -- The Good Life Expo at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall, Sept. 22-24 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Anyone can search for unclaimed property stored in the state's safekeeping.
Held at no charge are abandoned and unclaimed property such as dormant bank accounts, unclaimed inheritances, shares of stock, un-cashed checks (personal, payroll and dividend), deposits from utilities, insurance and medical refunds, and safe-deposit contents.
Searches can also be conducted at www.unclaimedproperty.hawaii.gov or by phone at 586-1589.
Haleakala fee change proposed
Haleakala National Park officials are proposing to change the park entrance fee structure, shortening the length of a permit to three days from seven. The current rate, which would not change, is $5 per individual on foot, bicycle or motorcycle and $10 per vehicle.
"We are proposing some minor changes to our fees," said Marilyn Parris, the park superintendent. "It is important to get feedback before we move ahead."

Kahi Mohala chief of staff named to head facility's child and adolescent unit
Dr. Kimberly Ann Charlton has been named clinical director of the Lokelani Child and Adolescent Unit at Kahi Mohala medical center specializing in behavioral health care.
She has been the facility's chief of staff and staff inpatient psychiatrist -- positions she continues to hold.
Charlton was clinical director of the Maui Family Guidance Center, Child & Adolescent Mental Health Division, before joining Kahi Mohala in 2002. She owned a private psychiatric practice on Maui and was staff psychiatrist at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
As clinical director of Kahi Mohala's Child and Adolescent Unit, Charlton supervises doctors and staff. The facility has 16 acute beds and 16 residential beds. She also works with staff to develop clinical and rehabilitative programs.
The Lokelani unit is being renovated, and Charlton is revamping programming to complement the physical plant.

Man held in alleged threat against his wife
Police arrested a 41-year-old man Saturday after he allegedly threatened to kill his wife.
At about 3:50 p.m., police said, the suspect showed up at his estranged wife's home in Ewa Beach armed with a handgun. A neighbor was home at the time the suspect threatened to kill the victim, and managed to intervene. Police said the neighbor was able to disarm the suspect.
But the suspect forced the victim back into her home. Police arrested him on suspicion of first-degree burglary, first-degree terroristic threatening, kidnapping and violation of a temporary restraining order.
Police probe alleged hit-and-run attack
Police are looking for a male suspect who allegedly struck another man with his vehicle Saturday in Pearl City.
At about 2:30 a.m., police said, a group of males were drinking at a spot along Waiawa Road when another group of males pulled up in the suspect's vehicle. An argument occurred between the two groups. During the argument, the suspect drove his vehicle toward the victim, struck him and fled the scene. The victim was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries and released.
Boyfriend, 42, charged with domestic assault
Police charged a 42-year-old man for allegedly assaulting his 24-year-old girlfriend Tuesday in Ewa Beach. He was identified as Stanley F. Almeida.
At about 3 a.m., police said, the victim reported that her boyfriend had earlier restricted her from visiting a friend's home at an apartment complex in Ewa Beach. The victim decided to go anyway. When she left her friend's apartment, police said, the victim was confronted by Almeida, who was waiting outside.
Almeida allegedly punched her face and beat her head against a concrete wall numerous times. He allegedly then grabbed her and drove her to his home. Police said Almeida threatened to throw her out of the vehicle and kill her. The victim later called police. On Friday an anonymous witness who knew about the assault called police and informed them of Almeida's whereabouts.
Officers arrested him on suspicion of second-degree assault. He was charged on Saturday, and is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Counterfeit $100 bills lead to arrest at bar
A 22-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly attempted to use counterfeit $100 bills at a bar in Waikiki.
At about 3:50 a.m. Saturday, police said, officers were sent to 2266 Kuhio Ave. after the suspect passed counterfeit bills.
A bartender gave the officers two $100 counterfeit bills with the same serial number that the suspect used.
Police arrested the 22-year-old man on suspicion of first-degree forgery. Upon further search, police discovered two more counterfeit $100 bills with the same serial number. Police informed the Secret Service of the offense. The case is pending investigation.

Man held in alleged attack with knife
Police arrested a 41-year-old man Saturday after he allegedly assaulted another man in Mililani.
At about 9:30 p.m. the suspect and the victim, a 26-year-old man, were involved in an argument on Meheula Parkway. During the argument, police said, the suspect grabbed a 9-inch kitchen knife from his bag and cut the victim on his left arm. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault.

Ground and air crews contain brush fire
Firefighters contained a brush fire in West Maui that scorched 500 acres Saturday.
The blaze was reported contained at 5:34 p.m. Members of the Forestry Division assisted firefighters and returned to the site between the Honoapiliani Highway tunnel and Ukumehame yesterday morning to extinguish hot spots. Air One also conducted water drops, said Battalion Chief David Kamalani.
Traffic fatality ID'd as 22-year-old man
Police identified a 22-year-old man who died Saturday, after he was involved in a collision in Kihei, as Devin Elliott.
At about 12:01 a.m. Saturday, police said, Elliott was traveling on South Kihei Road near Alanui Ke Alii Road on a 2001 Suzuki GSXR motorcycle at a high rate of speed.
Police said he broadsided a 2002 Mercedes driven by Nicholas Thurston. Elliott was pronounced dead at the scene. Thurston and his passenger, Mcallister Johnson, sustained minor injuries and were treated and released at the Maui Medical Center. Police said Elliott was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Thurston and Johnson were wearing seat belts.
