Leilehua turns back rival
Even when the touch isn't always golden, Bryant Moniz delivers in the clutch.
The senior quarterback threw three touchdowns, including a game-clinching 56-yard strike to Allan Macam, as Leilehua surprised No. 9 Mililani 23-14 last night at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.
A boisterous, near-capacity crowd saw the arch rivals enter the game with contrasting offenses. In the end, however, Leilehua's stellar play in the trenches made the difference.
The Mules improved to 2-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West play (3-1 overall). Mililani sank to 0-2 in conference play (2-2 overall).
"It's a great boost for our team and our confidence," Moniz said. "Knowing we beat one of the best teams in the West."
Moniz finished 12-for-24 with 237 yards passing and no interceptions. He missed a few open receivers early on, but the Mules were in control much of the way.
"I did my best. I had a couple of bad throws here and there, but I take my hat off to our 'D.' And our O-line gave me plenty of time," Moniz said. "Everybody stepped up."
Running back Micah Abreu-Laybon added 82 yards on 16 attempts and caught four passes for 89 yards to balance the Leilehua offense. The Mules' quick, swarming defense kept Jordan Torres under wraps most of the way. The tough-running senior finished with 96 hard-earned yards on 21 carries as the Mules dared Mililani to put the ball in the air.
"It's a tough loss, but you gotta win at the line of scrimmage," Mililani offensive coordinator Darnell Arceneaux said. "You can't have off-field distractions like not showing up to practice."
The Trojans often seemed off-rhythm, committing 10 penalties (69 yards).
Mililani opened the game with a drive that ate 8 minutes, 1 second off the clock. On fourth and 3 from the 5-yard line, the Mules stopped Torres a yard short of a first down. That set the tone for Leilehua, which broke a scoreless duel in the second quarter.
Abreu-Laybon caught a short pass from Moniz, weaved across the hashmarks and scored on a 68-yard touchdown play. Inexplicably, the senior flipped in mid-air over the goal line, and Brayden Keawe's extra-long PAT try was short.
Mililani drove 65 yards in five plays, scoring on Trojans quarterback Rustin Funakoshi's 13-yard keeper around left end. Colin Lund's extra-point kick gave the Trojans a 7-6 lead with 8:07 left in the second quarter.
The Mules responded on their next series, marching 64 yards in just five plays. A 23-yard pass from Moniz to Aric Edra over the middle sparked the drive. Moniz found Martin Iosefo in the left corner of the end zone for an easy 20-yard touchdown pass, and Leilehua led 13-7 with 5:43 remaining in the first half.
Leilehua, continuing to operate out of shotgun sets, opened the second half with a 63-yard drive. Keawe drilled a 23-yard field goal to give the Mules a 16-7 lead with 7:42 left in the third quarter.
Torres came alive late in the third, breaking off a 40-yard run. He capped that drive by plowing into the end zone from the 1-yard line, and Mililani trailed 16-14 with 11:04 left to play.
The Mules brought defensive linemen Viliami Haunga (6-4, 235) and Afe Talaeai (6-3, 230) to the field on the ensuing possession to line up in a single-back, double-tight-end set. Two plays later, Moniz connected with Macam on the 56-yard streak for the Mules' final touchdown. Leilehua led 23-14 with 10:26 remaining.

Preston Ayala returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown to help the Seariders edge the Sabers.
