Surfers gathered and formed a circle at Magic Island yesterday as part of the Surfriders Foundation's effort to raise awareness about water issues such as quality and public access. Surfers and supporters participated in the international ceremony, which was held yesterday.

Jacob Weinhardt, 7, had some fun trying out the siren in a Honolulu Police Department patrol car with the help of officer Marc Thom at the "Day to Discover" fun day yesterday at Makakilo Elementary school. The free community event sponsored by the Hawaii Government Employees Association featured interactive exhibits by union members.

The event continues today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nowack, formerly Wurts, is a former UH volleyball standout.
