Rally protests Molokai development
About 200 people attended a rally last night at Lanikeha Hoolehua Center to protest a proposed luxury development in southwestern Molokai. Molokai Ranch wants to develop some 200 2-acre lots on about 500 acres of land in Laau. But some residents, including many Hawaiian homesteaders, are opposed to it, said Walter Ritte, a leader of the native group Hui Ho'o Pakele Aina. Ritte said the proposed development is in the best coastal area for fishing on Molokai. The ranch needs to receive approval from the state Land Use Commission to change the land use from agricultural to rural in order to develop the land. The ranch declined to comment on the protest.

Former Lanai coach admits alcohol charge
A former assistant coach to the Lanai girls basketball team admitted to providing alcohol to the underage girls during a preseason tournament on Oahu in March 2005.
Dale Kapua of Lanai City entered a guilty plea yesterday in Wahiawa District Court to seven counts of providing liquor to minors.
He and his attorney declined to comment afterward.
District Judge James Dannenberg accepted Kapua's plea and granted a one-year deferral. If Kapua stays out of trouble for a year and abides by the court's conditions, including refraining from alcohol, performing 120 days of community service, having no supervision over minors and obtaining substance abuse assessment and treatment if necessary, the matter could be removed from his record.
He was also ordered to make a $1,400 contribution to the state.
Deputy Prosecutor Rich Stacey had argued for at least 30 days in jail.
Russell Zablan, former head coach, pleaded guilty in Honolulu District Court last month to identical charges and also received a deferral.
Both men were suspended shortly after school officials learned of the incident.
Businessman indicted in property transfer
A Honolulu businessman accused of obtaining a missing Kauai man's property using fraudulent means was indicted by an Oahu grand jury yesterday.
Henry Ponce Calucag Jr., also known as Hank Jacinto, was charged with first-degree identity theft, first-degree theft and second-degree forgery that allegedly occurred between April 11 and May 25.
According to the indictment, Calucag allegedly used the personal information of John Elwin, a polo player known in island clubs, to commit theft and forgery.
According to police, Calucag had signed a notarized document that transferred ownership of a car from Elwin to Calucag. Also after his disappearance, Elwin's credit card was used to order polo mallets from a Florida company which were delivered to Calucag's Honolulu address. The title warranty for a Kauai parcel owned by Elwin also had been transferred to a H. Jacinto.
Elwin has been missing since a midsummer trip to the Philippines with Calucag, a wealthy businessman in the Philippines.
Calucag has a federal conviction for bank fraud in a check-kiting scheme involving several banks in 1992.
He was sentenced to eight months in federal prison and five years' supervised release.

Beating death brings murder charges for 3
Three Waianae Coast men who turned themselves in to police this week were charged yesterday in the beating death of a 47-year-old bicyclist on Sept. 1.
Charged with second-degree murder were Lugavai L. Momoe, 32, of Waianae; Dillion K. Lepolo, 22, of Waianae; and Julius F. Mitchell, 35, of Makaha. Bail was set for each at $100,000.
Police said a fight broke out between the victim, Roger Haudenshild, and Lepolo on Farrington Highway and Old Government Road.
Witnesses at the scene broke up the fight, and one witness heard Lepolo allegedly tell Haudenshild he was going to pick up his friends and come back to kill him, according to a police affidavit.
Haudenshild rode his bike to Waianae Market. Lepolo, accompanied by Momoe and Mitchell, drove into the parking lot, the affidavit said.
The three men allegedly punched, kicked and stomped Haudenshild.
A witness said after they stopped, they threatened the witnesses not to say anything or they would kill them, too.
Haudenshild was taken to Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, where he died.

Masseur charged after girl, 14, claims assault
A 45-year-old massage therapist was charged with sexually assaulting a teenage girl during a massage session at a Waikiki hotel last week.
Reginald Comilang was charged Wednesday with first-degree sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl.
The girl reported to police that Comilang allegedly slipped his hand under her bikini bottom toward the end of a massage session at about 12:15 p.m. Sept. 1, a police affidavit said. He then allegedly used his fingers to sexually assault her three to four times, the affidavit said.
The assault occurred at the Outrigger Reef Hotel at 2169 Kalia Road.
The girl immediately reported the alleged incident to her mother, who called police.
An officer brought the girl to Comilang, who was being detained after being located in the pool area of the hotel. She identified him as her alleged assailant, and police arrested him.
