Kamehameha hosts California team

For the first time since nonconference games began, there will be just a smattering of games tomorrow in prep football.

The spotlight will be bright, though, for a handful of Oahu Interscholastic Association games, and Kamehameha's clash with Redlands East Valley (Calif.).

Here's a look at tomorrow night's games:

NONCONFERENCE

Redlands East Valley at Kamehameha -- The fourth-ranked Warriors (3-0) may be bruised after last week's all-out battle with Farrington, but they have depth, and coach Kanani Souza and his staff get one more week to study their personnel.

Offensively, Kahaku Ka'ai and Michael Hoke continue to share time at quarterback.

"Each kid brings a lot to the table," Souza said.

Redlands is a bit more standard, relying heavily on quarterback Ronnie Fouch, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound senior. Fouch has given a verbal commitment to play at Washington.

This is Kamehameha's final nonconference game before its league opener against Saint Louis next weekend.

LEAGUE PLAY

Castle at Moanalua -- The Knights have a pair of tough losses already, but are 1-0 in OIA Red East play. Quarterback Bryson Ukauka is key to Castle's run-and-shoot offense.

"Hopefully with our No. 1 quarterback returning back at full strength, we'll be better this coming week," coach Nelson Maeda said of Ukauka, who played only in the second half of last week's 17-13 loss to No. 3 Saint Louis.

Moanalua hasn't had a home game in three weeks. Savai'i Eselu continues to impress both at defensive line and as a wide receiver. Eselu made a spectacular diving catch down the sideline last week at Iolani, but Na Menehune especially like to use him as a powerful downfield blocker in their option scheme.

McKinley at Kailua -- The Surfriders finally got a win to validate the improvement they've made. Kailua had significant first-half leads against No. 8 Leilehua (20-7) and No. 2 Kahuku (10-0) before falling short. The win over a solid Damien squad last week boosted the confidence of coach Gary Rosolowich's squad.

The Tigers, meanwhile, got a well-deserved break last week. This is their Red East opener.

Kapolei vs. Aiea, Aloha Stadium -- Na Alii escaped with a 21-20 win over previously ranked Campbell last week. It was a big night for Aldodius Colquitt and Alan Fonoti, two key targets for quarterback Alfredo Higa.

Kapolei is young and rebuilding, coach Darren Hernandez said. Aiea has size and speed on both sides of the ball. If Na Alii contain Hurricane speedster Aaron Santiago, Kapolei will be pressed to find other contributors.

Waialua at Roosevelt -- In wins over Honokaa and Anuenue, the Bulldogs scored 48 and 41 points. Pretty good stuff, but no surprise with Caleb Fore at quarterback and a total of nine offensive starters back from last year's squad.

In Waialua's one loss so far, however, it was shut out by Waipahu. Which team will show up at Roosevelt?

The Rough Riders are 1-1 in OIA White play, making this a vital game. Like Waialua, they've also lost to Waipahu (28-14).

Kaiser at Nanakuli -- The Cougars like to air the ball out, but have absorbed some close losses, the most recent being a 13-12 defeat by Kaimuki.

The Golden Hawks play at home for the first time this season, and new coach Tai Apisa's team needs a win to start that playoff run in the OIA White.

Kaimuki at Pearl City -- The Bulldogs went to the air and came away with a key win at Kaiser last week. Kapono Kaiwi-Barrenuebo passed for 174 yards with no picks for Kaimuki's balanced offense.

Pearl City, meanwhile, is also 2-0 in OIA White play (3-0 overall).

Kapaa vs. Waimea, Hanapepe Stadium -- The gray bleachers of old Hanapepe Field bring back not-so-good memories for the visiting Warriors of Kapaa, who have not won there in many years.

The Warriors are good enough to handle a smaller neighbor island team (27-9 over Hawaii Prep), but struggled in a 27-0 loss to Kamehameha-Hawaii.

They've had two weeks to prepare for Waimea, a team that may be rejuvenated under new coach Kyle Linoz. The Menehunes have posted wins over Waiakea (38-0) and Hilo (33-20).

Baldwin vs. Lahainaluna, War Memorial Stadium -- The Bears (2-0) launched upward in the Star-Bulletin Top 10 to No. 6 this week. Though they did not have a nonconference game, Baldwin's prolific run-and-shoot offense has given Chase Nakamura (six catches, 135 yards against Maui) and Colten Quinabo (five receptions, 128 yards against Kamehameha-Maui) outstanding numbers.

Keaau at Hilo -- Albert Kawelu's Vikings (1-1) are counting on a sophomore quarterback, Devon Kell, against a Cougar squad that is considered a title contender. Keaau (0-2) is coming off a stunning 21-18 home loss to Konawaena.

Hawaii Prep at Honokaa -- This battle of neighborhood rivals, private school vs. public school, seems to favor the Dragons (1-1), who have scored a healthy 57 points in two games. Kaipo Stender scored on runs of 1, 4 and 14 yards as Honokaa rallied to upset Kamehameha-Hawaii last week.
