Rainbow Wahine fall 2 spots in volleyball poll
Two losses over the weekend resulted in a drop in the CSTV/AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll for the Hawaii volleyball team.
The Rainbow Wahine (3-2), ranked seventh in the preseason poll, placed ninth in the first poll of the regular season. They finished third in the Hawaiian Airlines Classic with a win over Colorado and losses to Florida and UCLA.
The Bruins (3-0) jumped seven places to No. 3 and received a first-place vote. Florida (4-1) dropped one place to No. 6. Nebraska (4-0) and Penn State (6-0) continue to hold the top spots.
Hawaii hosts Fairfield, Northwestern and No. 8 Stanford in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Volleyball Challenge starting Thursday,
Lajola advances in junior boys at U.S. Open
Aiea's Dennis Lajola will be in action in both singles and doubles today in the junior boys draw at the U.S. Open.
Lajola faces Artem Smirnov in a second-round match in the Junior Boys singles draw and teams with Donald Young for a first-round doubles match against Tatsuma Ito of Japan and Vladimir Zinyakov of Russia. Lajola defeated Anrej Martin 7-6 (0), 6-0 in his first-round singles match on Sunday.
BYUH soccer teams lose in debuts
The first-year Brigham Young-Hawaii soccer teams both came up short in their first matches yesterday.
The Seasiders women's team lost to Dixie State College 2-1 in double overtime and the men fell 3-2 to Embry Riddle.
Heidi Bushman scored for the BYUH women. Nickolas Vichrilli and Brian Noguera had the goals for the BYUH men.
