New law limits Waikiki parades
Mayor Mufi Hannemann has signed a bill into law that restricts the number of parades and other street events to 39 in Waikiki.
The bill grandfathers 14 events that have been held in Waikiki for 15 or more years.
Those events include the Kamehameha Day Celebration Floral Parade, Aloha Festivals Waikiki Hoolaulea and Floral Parade, Honolulu Marathon, Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Street Bikers United Toys for Tots Caravan.

Geophysicist, engineer, astronomer receive UH regents excellence award
The University of Hawaii Board of Regents has selected
Milton Garces,
Albert Kim and
Tobias Owen as recipients of the 2006 Regents Medal for Excellence in Research.
Garces is an associate professor in the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology at UH-Manoa.
He is in the forefront in the field of infrasonics in spacecraft, and has developed new techniques that may lead to distant detection of large tsunami that might hit Hawaii.
Kim is an assistant professor in civil and environmental engineering at UH-Manoa.
His colleagues consider his research groundbreaking, with 10 of his scientific papers published or accepted in significant journals since 2002.
The National Science Foundation awarded him a competitive, prestigious four-year grant.
Owen has been an astronomer in the Institute for Astronomy at UH Manoa for 16 years.
He is a respected international leader in planetary exploration and involved in all of NASA's major and planetary missions over the past 40 years.

2 men arrested in assault on 3 victims
Police arrested two male suspects for allegedly assaulting three other men leaving a liquor establishment in downtown Honolulu about 2:15 a.m. Sunday.
The suspects started making comments about the racial background of one of the victims, police said.
Another victim, 27, confronted the suspects, both 21. Police said the victim was then punched by one of the suspects.
Police said the other two victims, ages 24 and 25, attempted to break up the fight when one of the suspects started punching both of them in the face.
The 25-year-old suffered a chipped tooth and black right eye.
One of the suspects was arrested on suspicion of second-degree and third-degree assault. The other suspect was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault.

Motorcycle victim identified as Hilo man
Big Island police identified a 74-year-old man who died in a motorcycle crash Saturday as Frank W. Farias, of Hilo.
The crash happened on Route 240 in Honokaa.
Police said Farias was traveling west when he lost control of his 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle in an attempt to avoid a group of motorcycles in front of him.
Farias was taken by ambulance to North Hawaii Community Hospital in critical condition, where he died at 12:36 p.m.
Traffic investigators said speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash. Farias was not wearing a helmet, police said.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. The fatality is the 26th on the Big Island this year, compared to 23 at the same time last year.
Man arrested in Kailua-Kona stabbing
A Kailua-Kona man remained behind bars yesterday after a stabbing Sunday night in Kailua-Kona.
Police arrested the 22-year-old man in connection with the stabbing of a 60-year-old man at a home on Henry Street above the Lanihau Shopping Center at 11:13 p.m.
Witnesses had already taken the knife away from the suspect and were following him as police arrived on the scene, according to a news release.
The victim suffered a stab wound to the ribs and was taken to Kona Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition.

Male suspect sought in Waikele robbery
Police are looking for a male armed with a handgun who allegedly robbed another man in Waikele about 7:45 p.m. Friday.
Police said the suspect, armed with a handgun, entered the 24-year-old victim's vehicle on Lumiaina Street and took an undisclosed amount of money.
Police said the suspect fled. There were no reports of injuries.
The suspect is described as a man in his 20s, 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds. He was wearing a white undershirt and dark-colored shorts at the time of the robbery.
