Chaminade captures Nanook Classic
Chaminade won two matches yesterday to finish with a 3-0 record for the Nanook Classic volleyball tournament championship yesterday in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Led by Trina Kauliakamoa's 22 kills and 20 digs, the Silverswords defeated Nebraska-Kearney 30-18, 30-25, 28-30, 30-24.
Chaminade (5-2) then beat Alaska-Fairbanks 30-27, 30-18, 29-31, 30-17 as Brittnee Fonnesbeck pounded down 15 kills.
Takata, Toriumi victorious in judo
Honolulu's Taylor Takata and Arnold Toriumi won USA Judo Fall Classic Nationals titles on Saturday at Harlingen, Texas.
In the 66-kilogram division Takata defeated Pan-American silver medalist Jeremy Liggett, Nate Torra and Josh O'Neil to advance to the final. Takata then beat second-ranked Kenny Hashimoto for the gold.
In the 55-kg division, the top-seeded Toriumi also swept his way to gold, winning four matches.
Abubo loses in Rip Curl quarterfinals
Chelsea Georgeson of Australia defeated Hawaii's Megan Abubo in the Rip Curl Pro Mademoiselle, the fifth event on the Association of Surfing Professionals Women's World Tour.
Abubo placed equal fifth in the event and won $3,500. Georgeson advanced to the final along with fellow Australians Jessie Miley-Dyer and Melanie Redman-Carr and Brazil's Silvana Lima.
