No oil spills are seen in wake of typhoon
An aerial assessment conducted by the Coast Guard this weekend showed "no observable oil spills or the release of hazardous materials" on Wake Island following a nearly direct hit by Super Typhoon Ioke.
The assessment was conducted by a C-130 crew from Barbers Point. Its video footage has been inspected by the Coast Guard and Air Force personnel, according to a Coast Guard press release.
The island has several potential sources of pollution, including 5 million gallons of aircraft fuel and many other hazardous materials.
A second survey team is expected to arrive on the three-island atoll by Thursday. The Coast Guard Pacific Strike Team is to conduct a detailed ground survey, including inspection of all facilities. They will be taken there by the Coast Guard Cutter Sherman, a 378-foot vessel from California.
The Coast Guard is working with several agencies to assess the atoll and respond to any environmental problems.
Nearly 200 people were evacuated before Ioke struck. It is not known how long it will take for them to return to the Air Force base on Wake island.
Grease blockage causes sewage spill
A grease buildup might have caused a sewage spill of nearly 1,200 gallons in Halawa yesterday afternoon.
The spill was reported at 2:41 p.m. near 99-166 Kalaloa Street. City crews found a 15-inch line blocked by grease.
An estimated 1,000 gallons of untreated sewage entered a storm drain that leads to Halawa Stream, but crews removed the sewage before it entered the stream.
City crews cleared, cleaned and disinfected the area, including the storm drain, and took water samples. The public is being advised to avoid the area.
