Academy of the Pacific to laud trustee's work
The Academy of the Pacific will honor Edwin L. Carter at its annual "Evening for Pu'u O Hoku" fundraiser on Sept. 29.
Carter served on the academy's Board of Trustees for a decade and helped guide the school to a new campus in Alewa Heights.
He was also president and chief executive officer of Bishop Trust Co., executive vice president of Dillingham Corp. and a group vice president of Transamerica Corp. in San Francisco.
The gala will be held from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at the Oahu Country Club. Tickets are $150, or $2,500 to $5,000 for tables of 10. Call 595-6359.
Group to host classes on boating safety
The Honolulu Sail & Power Squadron begins a three-week session on boating safety on Saturday at the Waikiki Yacht Club.
The "Boat Smart Class" will be held from 8 a.m. to noon over three Saturdays, covering basics about boats, seamanship and sailing; trailer-boating; Hawaii regulations; charts and navigation; coastal and inland boating; marine radiotelephone use; and dealing with weather various conditions.

Conferences explore Hawaiian music roots
Musicians are invited to share ideas, techniques and thoughts about Hawaiian music at conferences on Oahu, the Big Island and Maui in October.
The Hawaiian Music Conference Series will cover what makes a song Hawaiian, details of publishing, how to write a Hawaiian song and protecting and copyrighting music.
Sessions are Oct. 7 at the Keauhou Beach Resort in Kona, Nov. 11 at the Outrigger Waikiki and Jan. 27 on Maui.
The conferences are presented by the Hawaii Island Economic Development Board, Hawaii Academy of Recording Artists and Hawaii Tourism Authority. Call 808-935-2180.

Edgy Lee discusses the art of filmmaking at Halekulani event
Filmmaker Edgy Lee shares the inspirations behind her work in an appearance from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Halekulani. "The Sustainable Mind, An Evening with Edgy Lee" will include a discussion, excerpts from Lee's films, music and a reception of Halekulani wines and hors d'oeuvres.
The event is part of the "Halekulani Living" series of seminars, showcases and performances with local and international artists, filmmakers and authors. Cost is $45. Call 931-5005.
Lee's most recent work was "The Hawaiians Reflecting Spirit," a documentary on local culture, especially how it ties in with environmental sustainability. The film premiered at the opening of the Museum of the American Indian in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
