Unbeaten Saint Louis storms back to beat Castle
Chase Alcott scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with 2:57 left, lifting No. 3 Saint Louis to a remarkable 17-13 comeback win at Castle last night.
Alcott's touchdown, off a perfectly executed option pitch from Micah Mamiya, capped a resounding second-half rally by the Crusaders (3-0).
A capacity crowd saw Castle drop to 1-2 overall. The Knights are 1-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East play.
Saint Louis' defense, spearheaded by linebacker Jacob Barit, kept the team in the battle as the offense struggled against a wave of blitzing defenders.
Castle often left its defensive linemen in upright positions, stunting on passing downs, and even first downs.
"We never quit. You gotta give credit to our offense, and to Castle," Barit said. "They played strong. It's a good feeling to win, but we're going game by game."
Crusaders coach Delbert Tengan was stoked, to say the least.
"This was excellent. That's what we wanted. We knew they would be an excellently coached ballclub," he said. "Micah made excellent decisions in the second half. Our guys were under fire, and coming from behind tested our mettle. As a coach, that's all you can ask for."
Castle took a 7-0 lead with 9:53 left in the opening quarter when Dylan Matsuda scooped up a fumble by Mamiya and sprinted 58 yards for a score.
Kenton Chun's 28-yard field goal ended a scoring drought for Saint Louis with 7:05 to play in the second quarter, but Castle stormed back with a three-play, 65-yard drive. Moku Bruhn escaped a blitzer and found Scott Keiter-Charles on a screen pass. The speedy senior blazed to a 65-yard touchdown play, and Castle led 13-3 with 5:42 to go in the first half.
Mamiya's 4-yard keeper to the left on an option gave Saint Louis its first touchdown and brought the Crusaders within 13-10 with 4:47 remaining in the third quarter.
No. 2 Kahuku 25, Narbonne 6
Lehi Aumua plunged in for two touchdowns and Kahuku had little problems with Narbonne of California.
Aumua ran for 93 yards on 17 carries for the Red Raiders, who won despite gaining only 161 yards -- only 8 of them through the air.
Junior Mataasa was Kahuku's other threat against the Gauchos, exploding for a 64-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to extend Kahuku's lead to 18-0.
Kahuku scored its final points when Paipai Falemalu fell on a fumble in the end zone.
Kailua 12, Damien 7
Zachary Akamine completed a 24-yard pass to Gerald Ho in the fourth quarter for the game-winning touchdown as the Surfriders earned their first victory of the year in nonconference play.
Akamine passed for both of Kailua's scores and had 126 all-purpose yards.
George Martin threw a 1-yard pass to Haku Correa for the Monarchs' only touchdown.
