Seariders make a statement in Mililani
Unranked Waianae earns its first victory of the season with a win over the No. 5 Trojans
Waianae should not be taken lightly this year, a point the Seariders proved last night with hard-nosed, old-school football to surprise No. 5 Mililani 28-13.
Losing coach James Millwood knew exactly what hit the host Trojans in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West opener for both teams.
"They played great football," said Millwood, whose team has owned the Red West for years. "They played like we normally try to play. Hard running, play-action. They kept our defense on the field and our offense didn't do anything when it needed to. It wasn't our regular football tonight. We didn't come to play and I told the kids the blame is all on me."
The Seariders (1-2) were coming off an encouraging 21-12 loss to No. 1 Punahou, and they came out flying on both sides of the ball. Aside from a mild letdown early in the second half, Waianae rarely let up.
On the first play from scrimmage, Seariders quarterback Ben McQuown fired a quick slant to Nathan Malaki, who sped to a 72-yard score and a 7-0 lead.
McQuown, who also ran for two TDs, figured in three of Waianae's four scores.
The Seariders' dominance was evident on Mililani's first possession, too. Trojans running back Jordan Torres, who piled up 234 yards on the ground in a win over Iolani last week, was stuffed for a 3-yard loss by Kaipo Punihaole. Last week, Torres was never tackled for negative yardage, compared to three times last night.
"Our boys played well," Waianae coach Daniel Matsumoto said. "It's really nice to see them working together. We got some momentum from the Punahou game. Even though we didn't win that one, the kids were feeling real good about each other. It was a big test tonight and we're going to try to work off of this game."

The Seariders defense continued to make big plays throughout. Fred Ellis had a sack and two other tackles for loss; David Paaluhi recovered a fumble and also had a sack; George Kauwalu caused the fumble recovered by Paaluhi; and Kanio Aipolani intercepted a pass.
"It was lack of execution," Mililani quarterback Rustin Funakoshi said about the inability of the offense to thrive. "We'll have to work harder on that. It didn't go our way tonight."
Waianae went up 14-0 on McQuown's 11-yard naked bootleg into the left corner of the end zone with 5:22 to go before halftime.
Mililani (2-1) threatened to take control to start the second half, cutting the deficit to 14-7 by driving 80 yards for a score, capped by Funakoshi's 1-yard sneak.
But the Seariders wouldn't cooperate with the Trojans' plans. Preston Cummings took the ensuing kickoff 33 yards to midfield to set up Danny Kekoanui's 5-yard TD run for a 20-7 cushion late in the third quarter.
McQuown put the game virtually out of the Trojans' reach with 4:12 left in the game, capping a 58-yard drive with a 30-yard broken-play scramble on fourth and 17. He then passed to Kekoanui for the 2-point conversion and a hefty 28-7 advantage.
"I saw their two ends coming on the outside and I saw a wide-open hole in the middle. I knew I had to make a big play on fourth down," McQuown said. "We stuck together and pulled off the upset."
Matsumoto thought McQuown's fourth-down run was one of the keys to the victory, knowing the Trojans could realistically rally from 13 points back.
Mililani did get one score back as Funakoshi hit B.J. Ogg with a 43-yard bomb to set up his 5-yard scoring pass to Torres as time ran out for the 28-13 final.
Torres carried 16 times for 90 yards, with the bulk of the yardage coming in the third quarter. Trojans linebacker David Ishida had two sacks and Eric Aglubat recovered a fumble.
