Hedin takes bronze in Guatemala

Kailua wrestler Dany Hedin finished third at the FILA Junior World Championships in Guatemala yesterday, her second medal in as many years.

Hedin won a silver medal at the tournament last year.

Hedin went 3-1 in the tournament, losing to Alena Filipava of Belarus in the main draw before pinning Jillian Gallays of Canada in the third-place match.

Hawaii's other wrestler in the tournament, Sadie Kaneda of Honolulu, finished in ninth place.

The United States placed third as a team with 46 points, behind Russia at 50 and Japan with 48.

HPU sweeps St. Martin's

The No. 13 Hawaii Pacific University women's volleyball team defeated St. Martin's University, 36-34, 30-26, 31-29 at Lacey, Wash., to improve to 2-6 for the season.

Barbara Martin led the way for the Sea Warriors with match highs of 26 kills and 13 digs, and hit .389.

Embry-Riddle edges HPU

The Hawaii Pacific University men's soccer team dropped its season opener to Embry-Riddle University, 1-0 yesterday at Kaneohe. Rafael Ferreira had an unassisted goal in the 69th minute for the only score of the match.
