Prison has new drug treatment building
The Department of Public Safety blessed a new treatment building for its KASHBOX drug treatment program at the Waiawa Correctional Facility yesterday, the department said in a news release.
The Legislature appropriated $100,000 for the construction of the new building. KASHBOX inmates built it themselves with help from the Masons' Union.
"KASHBOX has successfully touched many lives, and that's why we need more partnerships with businesses and the community so more of these types of programs can be provided to inmates," said interim Director Iwalani White in a news release.
The KASHBOX program started in 1990 with 16 beds. It expanded to 84 beds in 1998 and to its current 200 beds in 1999.
KASHBOX stands for Knowledge, Attitudes, Skills, Habits, Behaviors, Opinions and the X-factor. Inmates in the program are housed in an area separate from the general population.
