Events raise funds for Damien church
The work of Father Damien DeVeuster will be memorialized in events next week to raise funds for a planned Molokai church to be named after him.
Professional actor Casey Groves will perform author Aldyth Morris' one-man play "Damien" at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Ann Church, 46-129 Haiku Road, Kaneohe, and at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday at Chaminade University Mamiya Theater, 3142 Waialae Ave. The play tells the story of the 19th-century priest who ministered to Hansen's disease patients at Kalaupapa until he died of the disease in 1889. The performances will be free, but offerings will be accepted for the Blessed Damien Church building fund.
A fundraising banquet Friday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom will raise money for the project to replace the 60-year-old Kaunakakai Catholic Church with a new church and parish center. Historical photographs and Damien museum artifacts will be displayed at the event. Molokai musicians and comedian Frank DeLima will entertain. There will be a silent auction, and prints and jewelry reflecting Damien and Mother Marianne Cope will be on sale.
Tickets for the "Lei of Aloha for Father Damien" event are $200, half of which is tax-deductible. For reservations call Ilona Honig at 808-553-4420 or Maria Sullivan 808-553-5181.
Similar religious views of God to be explored
Members of several religions will discuss their beliefs in God at a Monday symposium sponsored by the All Believers Network.
The symposium on "Moving from Exclusion to Inclusion in My Faith" will feature Kent Keith, former Chaminade University president and author of "The Paradoxical Commandments." It will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Seicho-No-Ie Jisso Center, 47-451 Hui Aeko Place, near the Valley of the Temples in Kaneohe.
Common elements in the perception of God will be explored in group discussions in the morning, and sacred foods will be a topic at lunchtime presentations. Short prayers in 12 religions will be open to participants throughout the day.
The registration fee of $25 includes continental breakfast, lunch and beverages. For information, call Saleem Ahmed at 371-9360. Scholarships are still available to public school teachers.
