Take us along on your weekend explorations
And once again it's on: "In the Mix" has a new look and new home every Friday here on the flip side of
HILife to Go, our new section-within-a-section designed to fold up in your pocket and ride shotgun during all your nightlife adventures.
Just as I've done on the Star-Bulletin's Entertainment page in the Today section since 2001, I promise to keep you up to speed on the latest and greatest from Honolulu's club and concert scene while also sharing the interesting stuff I discover along the way. But enough about me -- there's lots going on this weekend ...
WE START at E&O Trading Co., where the crew from Positive Regime take over on Fridays.
The new weekly is called "Karma Sutra," and will feature performances by the Iona Contemporary Dance Company, a late night pupu menu and flavored martini specials. Doors open at 10 p.m.
My advice? Check if the Rum Jungle is one of the discounted drinks, even though it's well worth the $9 regular price ...
HOPE YOU got to see Rihanna sing the last time she was here, especially since tickets to her Sept. 15 concert at Pipeline Cafe are priced at $25. That's five times as much as it cost to see her in June at Aloha Stadium ...
I'm more excited to be at Pipeline on Sept. 16, when Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man will play an 18-and-over show ... More concerts coming up include Pato Banton at the Hawaiian Hut on Sept. 12, Skaladdin at Don Ho's on Sept. 16, Edi Fitzroy at Indigo on Sept. 29 and Berlin at Pipeline on Sept. 30 ...
THERE'S QUITE a buzz around Saturday's "ICON Sport" main event at the Blaisdell Arena. Fans will finally get to see
Jason Miller take on
Robbie Lawler, and word is the UFC's
Dana White will be in attendance. If you haven't heard, Hilo boy
B.J. Penn recently agreed to a championship fight with Matt Hughes on Sept. 23 at UFC 63 ...
MORE PICKS: "The Enterprise" returns to Detox on Friday ... DJ Krush spins at Fashion 45 on Saturday, while DJ Honda will be at Pipeline ... AYA celebrates four years on Sunday at NextDoor with LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad ...
ONLY IN Japan can Daniel Ho share concert billing with superstars like Linkin Park, Nelly Furtado, Metallica and Massive Attack.
Ho was a featured performer on the beach stage at the 2006 Summer Sonic Music Festival, a two-day event that drew more than 175,000 people. While there, he also announced a new partnership with Yamaha, whose representatives signed him to an endorsement deal during the trip.
Unfortunately, we have to wait until Oct. 21 to see him play at home, when he'll appear at the Hawaii Arts Alliance's "Celebrate the Arts" concert at Hawaii Theatre ...
