Managers announced for Hawaii winter league
Former major leaguer Dave Clark will manage the North Shore Honu in the Hawaii winter baseball league beginning Oct. 1.
The other managers are Gary Kendall (Sharks), Lenn Sakata (Beach Boys), and Todd Claus (Cane Fires). Coaches will include Hensley Meulens, Scott Aldred and Tony Arnold.
Eleogram advances at Rip Curl in France
Hawaii's Ola Eleogram finished first in his heat yesterday to advance to the round of 24 of the ASP Rip Curl Pro in Hossegor, France.
Local surfers Joel Centeio and Dustin Barca are still alive and will compete today, surf permitting.
Sea Warriors drop thriller
All-American Barbara Martin led four Sea Warriors in double figures with 24 kills, but it wasn't enough as the 13th-ranked Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball team lost in five sets to Central Washington 30-22, 26-30, 28-30, 31-29, 15-13 yesterday in Seattle, Wash.
>» Taina Savage had 25 kills in two matches, but the UH-Hilo women's volleyball team was swept by both Seattle University and Seattle Pacific yesterday in Seattle, Wash.
Seattle defeated the Vulcans 30-25, 30-24, 31-29 while Seattle Pacific won 30-17, 30-20, 30-26.
Rodriguez to coach in 2007 Hula Bowl
West Virginia football coach Rich Rodriguez has been chosen to coach in the 2007 Hula Bowl at Aloha Stadium.
Rodriguez, who has been named Big East coach of the year twice, is beginning his sixth season as head coach at his alma mater. The Mountaineers finished last season with an 11-1 record and a Sugar Bowl victory over Georgia. They are No. 5 in the 2006 preseason poll.
The Hula Bowl, now in its 61st year, will be played Saturday, Jan. 14. ESPN will televise the all-star game.
